age for makeup

I was 12-13 but I only wore eyeliner (electric blue), lip gloss (#44) and a little blush.
I didn't start with foundation/eyeshadow/mascara etc until 17

Re: age for makeup

My parents bought me one of those tacky eye shadow pallettes with a ton of colors for Christmas in 6th grade ( so 11.5) From then I gradually added things in, but I didn't wear mascara or foundation until I was 17.

I think I started wearing concealer starting in 7th grade. Not all 13 year olds have perfect skin.

Re: age for makeup

I think i started in high school. I had these tiny little Maybelline eyeshadows, but the colors were very light, with light lip glosses. Nothing like they are doing now with highlighter/contour/matte lips stuff.

Re: age for makeup

6th grade? I think I started around then. My mom sat me down and taught me how to use different products. I still have the same basic routine: concealer, eyeliner, mascara, powder, Chapstick if I feel ambitious.

I'm going to let my daughters can wear makeup starting in middle school (if they want), as long as it's light and natural-looking for school. No smoky eyes and red glossy lips in class, thankyouverymuch.

I’m not a fan of hard and fast rules for things like this. I think with some things the more you say no the more they rebel. If my daughter is interested in make up I would much rather bring her to the Bobbi brown counter and have them teach her how to apply it tastefully for her age. I would say around 8th or 9th grade. I don’t want her trying to learn herself and walk around looking like a clown like I did.

This exactly. I work in a high school, and it's easy to tell which girls were taught to apply makeup (or at least looked up Youtube tutorials) versus the ones that learned in the school bathroom and have to smuggle it in their backpacks.

age for makeup

I started wearing lipgloss and light eyeliner in 8th grade.

I will let my DD wear the same at that age. Foundation and concealer won't be allowed before HS. I don't want her to think she needs it. Today's makeup trends with teenage girls, is so over the top with the contouring and pounds of foundation, a la Kyle Jenner. I don't want to influence that kind of beauty.

Re: age for makeup

I’ve learned not to say what I’m going to do till I’m there lol. My oldest daughter is 7 and in 2nd grade, the only time she has worn makeup was for her dance recital and at BBB in Disney. I started wearing makeup in 5th grade and my mom didn’t teach me, I’ve actually never seen her wear makeup, so I plan to help my daughter when she starts asking. I don’t see makeup being a problem unless it’s overboard, but I’m not sure when is a good age to start.

age for makeup

My DD is in 8th grade and started wearing makeup last year as did most girls in middle school. Today these kids have access to so many youtube makeup tutorials that I think most of them do it really well. My daughter wears age appropriate makeup for school but loves to practice different looks and is quite talented. I see no harm in wearing some makeup , middle school is hard enough with other issues.....

At 13 you don't really NEED make up.
Your skin is the best it's going to be!
Firm, tight, glowing, dewy. Full of collagen and hope!

I would kill to have the skin I had at 13- I wouldn't need a stitch of foundation.
And what are we concelaing at 13? Dark circles? Eye bags?
Come on.

Aww, this would have brought 12 year old me to tears. I had horrible acne and that was the only reason I started to use concealer and foundation to hide it. I was so jealous of girls who only wore lip gloss and mascara. As my skin cleared up I actually wore less and less makeup as I got older.

I would be ok with light make-up in middle school.
If my kids have horrible acne like I did I will take them to the Derm.

Middle School. I teach middle school and most girls are wearing it. I wouldn't want her to be left out or have to feel different.

I agree middle school. I started to wear it in 7th grade. My 5 year old is obsessed with it. She can do a full face already of course I don’t let her wear it out of the house but she does a good “crease shadow” and applies lipstick like a pro. I’m sure she will start begging as soon as the other girls start to wear it to school. To me makeup isn’t a huge deal. It washes off, it’s not permanent and it doesn’t hurt anyone.

OMG your 5 year old can do a "crease shadow"???
I can't even do eyeshadow on myself!
No joke.
I don't wear it becuase I literally can't do it. It looks like crap if I attempt it- laughable.
But I am very very very artistically challenged. Can't draw a staright line with a ruler, can't wrap a gift nicely.
I need to talk to your DD.

wow I guess I'm the minority here Chat Icon

My oldest is a senior and she only just asked to wear makeup with senior photo shoot coming up.
She asked for nail polish last year and colored lip gloss.

For me I chose to start wearing makeup at 23.Chat Icon

age for makeup

My daughter is 11 and wears lip gloss when we go out. Not to school. She will be allowed to wear light makeup when she starts middle school (which is 7th grade for us). Her school doesn't allow make up for 6th Graders.

For myself, I barely wear makeup now but I did start with foundation in 6th Grade. I had very bad acne and it helped a little bit.

Re: age for makeup

I'm also in the minority - I see no need for my daughter to wear makeup out of the house until 9th grade. That being said....she is only 7 and LOVES makeup already and has fake play makeup at home. Soooooo.....I definitely foresee some issues in the future!
