AFP, and other tests...

Hi Ladies,

I'm 17 weeks. We have the option of doing the AFP this week at my appoitment if we'd like to. This is the first test we've been offered.

We are having a very hard time deciding whether or not to do it. We keep going back and forth.

What are your opinions on this test (and other tests)? Would you mind sharing any pros/cons that you considered in making your decision?

TIA! Chat Icon

Re: AFP, and other tests...

It's a very personal decision...
I personally decided to have all tests offered with both pregnancies...

I guess basically it comes down to what you would do with the results... I know what I would do so that's what made my decision...

HTH.

Re: AFP, and other tests...

I did it because it seemed logical to do this since I had an ultrascreen at 12 weeks. It is just a blood test and will help the doctor determine if you are at a higher risk for certain birth defects. I decided to do both the ultrascreen and the AFP instead of an amnio since I am over 35.

I did it. There's no risk to the fetus, and had the test come back with anything other than perfectly normal results we probably would have switched to a hospital with a NICU, just in case the baby needed special care.

Re: AFP, and other tests...

It's a very personal decision that you have to decide about. My DH and I talked about it before the 12 week ultrascreen. We decided we wanted to do the tests because we wanted to be informed. It wouldn't have changed whether or not we were going to have the baby, but if something were to come up we could research it and be as informed as we could.

Re: AFP, and other tests...

Obviously it's a personal decision -but for us, we thought, why not? I would rather know so I can prepare myself and adjust to any changed expectations if there is something wrong. Personally, when we had the ultrascreen (and are having AFP tonight) we always agreed we wouldn't terminate, but we are the type of people that like to have all the facts in order to prepare (all the medical facts, - not finding out the gender Chat Icon )

We skipped the AFP and had an amnio.
