AFOs/Orthotics
Anyone's DC wear AFOs? My DD was just prescribed bilateral hinged AFOs for Toe Walking/Tight heel cords. I'm wondering how tough it's going to be to wear them in the summer and where can I buy knee socks this time of year?

Re: AFOs/Orthotics
My DS has worn AFO's for the past 2 years. We get our socks at Old Navy. The triple roll sock are long enough to fit over the AFO's but sometimes I buy a size bigger to help them fit better. And they sell a 10 pack which is really easy. My DS wears them year round with sneakers and since they help him walk he prefers them. At the beach we go barefoot.
Just make sure to take them off at least 2 hours a day to get some circulation. My DS's feet get really sweaty and has gotten Athlete's foot a few times. We use a foot spray at night and special foot powder in the morning when we put them on.
As for sneakers- we buy size wide and 1-2 sizes up depending on the sneaker. Saucony, New Balance, and some Stride right that only have the top Velcro Strap fit the best.
FM with any other questions.

Re: AFOs/Orthotics
Your orthotist (guy who makes braces) might sell special socks. They are a bit pricey but are long, thin and designed to pull sweat away from the foot. Also pricey sneakers are not necessary. As long as they are wide and stable the orthotic is doing the work of the sneaker. Payless smart fit brand is great. I not sure where you are located but I am a pediatric physical therapist and I work closely with rob biagi from north shore orthotics in port jeff. He is so knowlegable and great with the kids.

Thanks! I'm an OT and have worked with Rob before. Unfortunately he doesn't accept my Insurance so it would be $388 out of pocket. I ended up seeing Glen at East coast orthotics & prosthetics. Rob is definitely awesome. My DD saw Dr Semel (physiatrist from St Charles) who prescribed the AFOs and she refers to Rob as well. I'll probably end up ordering socks on line because at this time of year, I haven't found anything in stores.

Re: AFOs/Orthotics
This site sells thigh high socks for LOs. DD needed long socks for under her pavlick harness as a newborn but of course I found these after she was done with it.

My son who is 20 M just rec'd his new AFOS today with the hinge. He also has tight heel cords. It's mainly his right foot. His left is fine. He is not walking indepently yet. Is your DC? We wear socks from childrens place.

Re: AFOs/Orthotics
She met all of her gross motor milestones on time, but a little before the age of 2yrs began to walk on her toes. Toe walking is considered typical at 2, but with my DD it just kept getting progressively worse and worse. Now at 3yrs 1 month she walks on her toes almost all the time. She's a little low tone and now has mild to moderate gross motor delays. The frequent toe walking has caused tightness at her ankles/heel cords. She also falls down constantly due to bring off balance from being on her toes. I'm hoping the AFOs not only stretch her out really well, but break her of this habit. She also gets PT once a week.

Is PT still under EI? Maybe they will pay for it. DS had ankle AFOs and County paid for it - we used Rob as well.

Re: AFOs/Orthotics
I also use Rob and Dr. Semel! Love them!!! My DD has been wearing AFOs for over 2 years now. We also get the Old Navy triple roll socks. They are perfect! They come all the way up to the knee, come in all colors (between boy & girl, you can match every outfit), and they are long enough to even fold over the top so the braces are partially covered, and you see the socks. I've never paid more than $1 per pair. I highly recommend them!
