Adding an Interior Door

My BIL is moving in and renting the upstairs of our cape. I want to put a second front door to block off and add some privacy since I will have a baby in about a month and plan on breastfeeding.

I don't want to worry about him just walking on in.

This is what our hallway looks like.

Any ideas on how to do a door with a rounded step like that???

I thought it would be easy..but now I'm not sure.

Re: Adding an Interior Door

even if you put a door up, you still having the opening from the stairs looking into your space.

that being said, I think it might be easier to put the door at the top of the stairs, since there would already be a door frame there.

yea but he still has to walk in the front door. We were going to put a wall up also, we are just trying to figure out the best way to do it with the curved stair.

I agree...
but then he will still be walking through your area...

Re: Adding an Interior Door

if you are going to put a wall up, then I really would just put the door at the top of the stairs. I think creating a new door frame at the bottom is definitely do-able, just a lot more work. he wouldn't be in your area really, just the few feet from the bottom of the stairs to the front door.

the more I think about this - I just realized my cousin has the same set-up. she has the door at the top of the stairs, and where you would build the wall, she put another door for her family.

Re: Adding an Interior Door

Your gonna have to bump the (new) wall out further than you probably originally wanted to to accomodate the bottom step.
Or else, could you possibly build the wall on an angle?

Or, have your bottom step replaced with a regular step then build your new wall straight across.

Re: Adding an Interior Door

If it was a straight step it definitely wouldn't be a problem. I'm not crazy about this BIL so I really want as much separation as possible. But its money and with me not working for a few more months we need it.

I didn't think about possibly building the wall out a bit.
