I just found out I'm pregnant a few days ago; I have my first Dr. appt tomorrow

I'm just wondering what you ladies did about caffeine when you got your BFP

Re: ? about caffeine

Every doctor is different. Some say no caffeine some say one cup of coffee a day. I personally cut out coffee but continued to drink diet coke and occasionally tea.

Re: ? about caffeine

The only reason I cut out coffee was because it suddenly became my first aversion. Chat Icon I miss it. I drink one cup of tea a day instead.

Re: ? about caffeine

Your dr. should tell you at your first appointment. I was never a coffe person and drank de-caf tea, and hate soda, so it was easy for me to avoid it. I occasionally have caffenated iced tea and eat lots of chocolate so I don't avoid it completely.

Re: ? about caffeine

well i was an avid coffee drinker, so in the first week, i cut down the amount of coffee each day until i no longer drank it.

Now i don't drink any caffeine.

Re: ? about caffeine

I'm supercautious about what I consume... Caffeine is the easiest thing to eliminate.... I buy decaf coffee and tea, and limit my dark chocolate consumption....

The list of no-no foods for pregnancy include:

caffeine
artificial sweetener
alcohol / cigarettes (of course)
deli salads (listeria risk)
undercooked/rare meats
runny eggs/sauces made from raw eggs
cheeses made from unpasteurized milk

many dr's say you should heat-up coldcuts before you eat them to limit the listeria risk.....

Re: ? about caffeine

Doctors say lots of different things. Mine said that a cup of coffee a day was fine. I drank regular around the house, switched to half caf at Starbucks, and cut out the afternoon diet cokes.

Re: ? about caffeine

Each doctor is different. Mine didn't seem to care if I still stuck to my 1 cup of coffee a day or drank diet soda within moderation.

I still drink 1 cup per day each morning and I'm 30 weeks. I still treat myself to a diet soda when I feel the need to have it.

Ask your OB.

Re: ? about caffeine

my doctor said a few ounces a day is allowed, but I cut it out completely in the first and will probably drink a tiny bit when I'm past the first trimester...

Re: ? about caffeine

150 mg - 300 mg a day is the recommended amount by experts. A few cups of tea is still fine. That's what I still drink everyday since I gotta have my caffeine fix somehow.

This is what I found at American Pregnancy:

1. Starbucks Grande Coffee (16 oz) 400 mg
2. Starbucks House Blend Coffee (16 oz) 259 mg
3. Dr. Pepper (12 oz) 37 mg
4. 7 Eleven Big Gulp Diet Coke (32 oz) 124 mg
5. 7 Eleven Big Gulp Coca-Cola (32 oz) 92 mg
6. Ben & Jerry's Coffee Buzz Ice Cream (8 oz) 72 mg
7. Baker's chocolate (1 oz) 26 mg
8. Green tea (6 oz) 40 mg
9. Black tea (8oz) 60 mg
10. Excedrin (per capsule) 65mg

Re: ? about caffeine

I tried my best not cut our caffeine during the first trimester, although my dr. said it was fine to have up to 2 cups of a caffeniated beverage per day. But, since I've hit the second trimester I've had a glass/can of soda here and there.

Re: ? about caffeine

I didn't have much to begin with so I basically cut it out all together. There has been the rare occasion when I've had a coke, but I don't miss it at all. Every now and then I'll have a decaf coffee or decaf ice tea. In my perspective, it can't hurt to cut it out and it is healthier overall, my doctor agrees.

Re: ? about caffeine

I still have about 8-10 oz of caffeine a day. Usually a cup of tea. Studies that show effects were more than 24 oz a day from what I was able to find so I am way under that.

Re: ? about caffeine

I don't like soda or coffee and only occasionally drink tea. I haven't been drinking tea since I got my BFP, but I rarely drink it other than when it's cold outside.

Re: ? about caffeine

my dr said you can have 2 cups / day. I tried to cut it out all together and I got horrible migranes. I will usually drink water all day and have a glass of iced tea with dinner ( I don't drink coffee)

Re: ? about caffeine

My doctor had told me in moderation. I drank one or two diet cokes per day (not every day but most) to help with mild headaches - plus I love them. I was willing to give them up though but the doc said no need.

Each doctor is different and you should check with yours but I will say that it did not harm my pregnancy in any way.

Re: ? about caffeine

As has been said more times than I can count. Each doc is different. Mine is REALLY lax. But he pushes high comsumption of water that leaves very little room for anything else.

I personally gave up caffine a year before I got my BFP. I knew I wanted to try to get preggers and I needed to lose 15lbs so I figured that might be a way to start. I lost no weight but I did cut out my caffine. I drink no soda, no tea, nothing. I drink water and juice primarily. I sometimes drink crystal light packets in my water and splurge with a sprite, 7up or a root beer (all caffine free).

Its a lot easier not to think about I can and can't drink when I just cut it out all together. Its not just healthy for the baby, its healthy for me. It helped me tons with my IBS and tummy issues. *shrug*

To each their own.
