Abandoned homes...UPDATED! I need more HELP!
ETA: I got the name of the taxpayer from the tax assessors office. I want to write them a letter asking them if they are selling the house - but WHAT do I write???? I don't want to come off too pushy or insulting
How would you go about looking into an abandoned home? DH and I were driving around a neighborhood and found a home that seemed nice but was very overgrown and obviously abandoned. How can we find out of the owner wants to sell it?

Re: Abandoned homes...
you can use zillow or property shark to see the last sale & get info on the owner. You can also pull the deed at the town clerk.

Re: Abandoned homes...
check out zillow like it was mentioned above or go down to the town hall or village hall to pull the info on the house.
I have one of them by us as well but we see people go in and out every few days but nothing is done, usually if it's a forclosure they take sometime to prepare it for the market.

Re: Abandoned homes...UPDATED! I need more HELP!
i would just tell them that you see that they own a home that is vacant and wondered if they were in the process of selling or will be selling. if they were, could they kindly let you know prior to listing wtih a realtor as you are interested to get inside and take a look.
let them know that you love the neighborhood and would love to stay in it.
don't get too wordy or say too much... make sure you give them a cell phone to call back, eliminate the possibility of playing telephone tag.

I think rachel's advice is perfect. My MIL gets a letter from someone every 3 months about some land she owns (in AZ) and while she's not selling, she still has his info tacked to her bulletin board.
