A Two Parter
If you are self conscious about your weight.. do you ever feel weird eating fattening or rich foods in front of other people?
If you are or aren't self conscious about your weight.. do you take any particular note of a well padded person when they eat rich foods?
My girlfriend hypothesizes that people with weight issues (real or imagined) tend to order differently when they feel that others can see them eat. She further believes that people without weight issues do not care what anyone eats in general.. but those who do have weight issues are quicker to judge when another person eats fattening foods.
I will admit that depending on my level of comfort with whomever I am with - I may order less than or differently than what I would otherwise. I can further admit that I DO notice when other people order heavy or rich foods. But it isn't out of a sense of judgement.. more out of jealoousy.
What about you?

Re: A Two Parter
It honestly depends on my mood.
If I am feeling 'fat' that day I will either eat till I burst, or barely eat at all. Some days I have that little part of my brain saying easy there, others not.

Re: A Two Parter
I think people with food or eating issues might care what people think about what they are eating, not necessarily just people with weight issues.
I know people who are overweight who have no problem eating whatever they want, whenever they want. I also know thin people who obsess over everything they put in their mouth. I know people who, when they overindulge, must have a "partner in crime" to eat with, so they don't feel guilty. I think all of these people have eating or food issues that stem from self esteem issues, regardless of their weights.
I have reached a point in my life where I rarely care what anyone else thinks about what I do. I am a good person, treat people with dignity and respect and try to be honest and have integrity. If someone has a problem with me ordering a huge plate of nachos and eating them myself, they can go scratch.

Re: A Two Parter
Definitely.... I have people that are constantly watching what they are eating, therefore, I always make sure to order something on the "healthier" side when eating with them

Yes....I do struggle with my weight and yes I feel self-conscious eating certain foods in front of CERTAIN people. My family, no, doesn't bother me. DH's family...OMG they are all like sticks and call each other on 5 lb gains. I hate eating in front of them.
They have crappy hair, though. And lackluster social skills. I win there.

Nope, don't care. It's purely a personal decision how I feel that day.
If someone wants to judge me they can..they can also bite me.

Re: A Two Parter
I am overweight but I don't have that much of an issue with it psychologically. I like being thinner, and have been in recent history so I'd like to get back to that. But I'm not embarrassed when I eat "bad" foods. I enjoy them too much.
I know someone who is infatuated by her weight and even if someone is not on a diet, she will make comments about how much fat is in their food or how she could NEVER eat that. I think that's beyond rude but I understand that it's her problem and need to constantly be talking about weight and food.
So when I eat fattening food around her, I relish it that much more. I think she said something about it once and responded like "Yup, I'm enjoying every fat gram! Don't be jealous!"
As to the second part - I don't judge what anyone else eats. However, if they eat fattening foods all the time, don't exercise, but still constantly complain about their weight, I tend to not to want to listen to it anymore. But that's something in general - I don't think you should complain about things all the time without taking any action to rectify them!

Re: A Two Parter
Sometimes during lunch with my co-workers I can honestly say that I think to myself "WHY is she eating that?" or "Doesn't she know how bad that is for her!?" But I would never say anything.
I probably wouldn't think that if they didn't constantly talk about being on weight watchers, wanting to lose weight, always saying how overweight they are, always talking about what great shape i'm in, etc.
Just yesterday a co-worker who always complains about her weight picked up popeyes for lunch. Fried chicken (ate all the skin), a biscuit, rice in some kind of gravy and a diet coke.
I also think it's because I eat well, work out and take care of my body. I like being in shape and sometimes couldn't imagine putting some of the foods in my body that they eat on a daily basis.

I live my life in a constant state of wanting to lose 10 pounds...but I do not know if I would constitute it as self consicous, bc I am happy with how I look-just feel it could be improved.
One of the reasons I have the 10 pds is bc when we are out with friends, especially, I find I overindulge--wine, fattening foods etc.
I have no shame lol and will eat whatever I want in front of anyone.
With that said I see what you are saying.
I was chubby growing up, I ate whatever I wanted, I lost some baby fat in college put some on...
Most of my friends ate very healthy and made comments like "oh I wish I could eat that" .
I actually lost a lot of weight bc their healthy eating habits influenced me to eat healthy. Although at a point I was so extreme with diet and exercise, I could never maintain that bc I just love to eat too much.

YES!! Or if we're eating a particularly delicious dinner - I would never take seconds even though it was delicious and tasty I want to eat it all. I seriously curb my food intake around others.

I am too busy enjoying my food to notice what other people eat.

I could BE your co-worker (I'm not.. but I could be! ).
I am 10000% guilty of this type of behavior. I know I SHOULD NOT eat that slice of cream cake or eat an order of fries with my lunch... but I'll do it. And I'll know every calorie, every fat gram, every single bad effect it's going to have on me from the bloated, draggy feeling to the possible breakouts.. but I do it ANYWAY. And I think this is why I am sometimes self conscious around certain people.. because I know people are wondering if I am aware or if I am just stupid about food. I know people are wondering what happened to my last attempt at WW or The Zone or whatever. I feel like my struggle to gain control of my own eating is offensive and disappointing to THEM! So I'll order the salad. I'll give the jealous stink eye to the guy with the chili cheese fries and feel so unsatisfied.. that I'll go home and raid the fridge for cookie dough and ice cream!

Re: A Two Parter
If I'm with somebody who is overweight and makes it known that he/she is unhappy about it and then orders an artery clogging meal, you better believe it that in my head I'm screaming "no no no, you shouldn't be eating this!". If its somebody close to me I will say something...if not, then I just keep it to myself. I don't really pay attention to what strangers around me are eating...I like to indulge in my own food

I am slightly overweight- about 5-7 pounds and I am very careful what I eat when I am out because you never know what restaurants add to it
I have to be honest and say that when I was in the supermarket a couple weeks ago, the lady in front of me was overweight and so were her kids and I was upset when I saw all the junk she had in her cart- koolaid, chips, chocolate etc
I didnt say anything and I didnt mean to be judgemental, I just felt bad that the kids werent learning about nutrition and eating healthy

Re: A Two Parter
I have my own weight issues so I tend to notice more what other people eat. In public I order healthy stuff (unless I'm pregnant, then all bets are off ) and while I don't judge someone for ordering a "rich" meal, I do notice it. Heck, for all I know they've just lost 50 lbs and that's their "cheat" day.

Re: A Two Parter
When I was heavier, I would feel self conscious about eating. Then I lost the weight and ate whatever I wanted. Now I only take notice of what others are eating if they're also complaining about their weight. And I generally don't judge, just take notice. If someone is big and eating a brownie or a big ol burger with fries, I could care less, unless between mouthfuls they're saying that they're fat. Then go sing your sad song to someone else.
If I were to see someone eat like an entire cake or something, then that would be gross no matter what they looked like are unless that person is in REALLY good shape or pregnant. Pregnant women can eat whatever they want.

I'm definitely more judgmental about what I see in people's shopping carts. My philosophy is that eating out is a treat so get whatever you want. But if you're filling your house with junk food, then it's an all the time thing and that's not good. I think to myself "You know you could lose 10lbs this year by not drinking all that soda!"
