A spin-off to the spin-offs ( SAHM, Working out of the home moms)

Out of curiosity and a question I have always wondered to myself.....

Do you think that in a household where both parents and child are out of the home all day, the house generally seems to be kept cleaner ???

I am a SAHM ( well I am a licensed NYS in home daycare provider on a hiatus-extended extended maternity leave- LOL) While I was doing daycare ( in the lower level, seperate from my living area, my house was always pretty neat, not perfect but neat....It felt good to come home from "work" to a clean house...( even though I was only downstairs)...BUT, at the time I had no biological children of my own...

My DS is like a little tornado, so I find myself literally cleaning every waking minute Chat Icon ...And I tend to make quite a mess myself most of the time....So my question is...

In that aspect is working outside of the home "easier" ?

Either way, mothering/fathering is a tough tough job so a big Chat Icon to all of us Chat Icon

oh boy do i agree with this..
my house was very clean when i was at work, my ds at school and dh at work..
since dd has arrived, and i was on disability and maternity leave, and now am a SAHM, its ridiculous..and hard to keep up with, esp in the summer when ds is home too.

Until this July, I had a nanny but now that the kids go to care and the home is empty more, it's definitely cleaner as far as floors and dust. The kids' mess happens within 10 minutes of being home though.

Yes and no.

I took an extended maternity leave of almost a year, so I was home with DS during that time. Now, I work full time again.

For me, I think the house is definitely neater and tidier during the week, now that I am working again, because no one is home to mess it up during the day.

For the real cleaning type stuff, though, I would say the house is dirtier (cleaning the floors, windows, etc.) I used to get a lot of this type of cleaning done when my DS napped and now I find I am too tired after working all day to do it at night, and I hate spending my weekend cleaning when I have a limited time to spend with my family during the week.

ETA: I only have one child, I am sure if I had more, my answer might be different.

I think so. Things are everywhere. I don't have time to do the cleaning because whenever DC are sleeping and on the weekends, I am working. If I worked out of the house, I could get stuff done at night and on the weekends.

ITA - there aren't toys thrown everywhere or spills or food on the floor, but my house doesn't get dusted regularly, the bathrooms are not cleaned as much as I would like, the kitchen floor hasn't been scrubbed in a while, all b/c I am too tired when I get home and want to spend the time with my DS. When he is sleeping, I fall asleep from exhaustion. My house is orderly and neat, but not as clean as I would like it.

Re: A spin-off to the spin-offs ( SAHM, Working out of the home moms)

My house is dirtier Chat Icon . My job got really busy about 6 months ago so I have been working 60-65 hours a week. I worked almost every Sat up until a month ago when they finally hired someone to help me.

I also have an hour and a half commute so by the time I get home it's usually between 8-9...just in time to get Kaydyn ready for bed and then I usually pass out myself.

Dishes don't get done, vaccuming doesn't get done, laundry doesn't get done...until the weekend and even then sometimes we're too busy to really clean.

Maybe if I worked more normal hours my house would be neater b/c I would have time to do stuff.

I work FT but my neighbor is a SAHM. She asks me "how do you do it - you work FT and your house is ALWAYS clean" I tell her "thats because I am only in it a few hours out of the day".

Overall, probably a bit. Less dishes, less splattered food, crumbs, etc. I know on the days when we are out a good chunk of the day, it always seems cleaner.

My house was cleaner before I became a SAHM (hey...I just realized Im a WAHM!!!Chat Icon )...

I found that when I worked I also tended to not mind picking up a few things when I got home...AKA SPEED CLEANING...now, after a long day of picking up after the kids, I lose my steam....

ITA - people would always ask how I do it and I really didn't think much of it. Honestly I always wondered how houses could be turned into shambles....

Then I went PT and I finally understood!! These little people make BIGGGG messes!! Chat Icon

DH and I both work. My house looks like a super strong wind blew through it. Chat Icon We do the best we can- we're settling for "happy messy".

Re: A spin-off to the spin-offs ( SAHM, Working out of the home moms)

No I don't think working out of the home is 'easier' on state of home. I think it's relative to each household.

Both DH and I work FT and our house is definitely not super tidy. In fact I tend to clean less now that I'm working because when we are home we try to spend quality time as a family. There aren't enough hours in the day for me to keep an immaculate house, run errands, do laundry, etc.... in the few hours I'm home in the evening or on the weekends, while trying to spend time with the family.
