a rumor about pittosin(spelling?)
I heard that when you are induced, you are more likely to have post partum depression. Is this true?

Re: a rumor about pittosin(spelling?)
I was induced and wasn't depressed. I did have baby blues but that's something most people go through. That lasted around 2 weeks.

First pregnancy I was induced and had pitocin...no depression.
Second pregnancy I went into labor on my own...no depression.

Same-- it was pretty bad though! I think my issues had more to do with BFing problems, being a scared new mom, and feeling awful. Hopefully it will be better this time around!

Re: a rumor about pittosin(spelling?)
I very much doubt that that's true because I had a lot of pitocin (during my induction I just was not having any progress so my doctor ordered them to REALLY up the pitocin more than the nurse told me that they usually do) It worked - got labor going, but no side effects. I definitely wasn't depressed. I did experience a bit of the well-known "baby blues" but that was very minor & only lasted a few days at most.

Re: a rumor about pittosin(spelling?)
I was not Induced, but was given pitocin during labor because I wasn't progressing. I had no PPD whatsoever, not even a hint of baby blues. I was concerned during my pregnancy that I might be predisposed to PPD because I suffered from severe depression for about 4 or 5 years during my late teens-early 20's. Thankfully, it didn't seem to have any bearing on PPD for me!

Re: a rumor about pittosin(spelling?)
I was not induced with either pregnancy & had PPD both times. I did have pitocin for both labors, but actually went into labor on my own. I don't think it was related.

Re: a rumor about pittosin(spelling?)
There are many things we don't understand about birth and we really don't know how the use of artificial oxytocin (known as pitocin) affects the brain of the mother or the baby in many ways.
The natural oxytocin your body produces is also known as the "love hormone." Scientists think it helps mothers bond with their babies. So I could see that it if the natural oxytocin were replaced by pitocin, which does not have the bonding qualities, that it *could* make bonding more difficult or lead to PPD. I'm certainly not saying that it does, but that would be the rationale behind it.
Studies also indicate that mothers who have traumatic or difficult births are more likely to have PPD. Pitocin does change the quality of contractions, making them more difficult to handle and may be associated with more difficult births, so there could be a link there, as well.

Re: a rumor about pittosin(spelling?)
Technically I wasn't induced because my water did break on my own with DS. But my contractions were sporadic so they gave me pitocin.
I did not have PPD.

I was induced and did have ppd. I never thought the two could be somehow connected. Interesting.
