A little embarrased to admit this
I don't have a library card. I want to go and get a book. How embarrasing is this? I will walk in there and ask for one?
I did this once and they told me their systems were down and I would have to come back when it was fixed.
If I live in Bethpage can I go to the Plainview library?
Really, pardon my ignorance. I did this often as a kid but not as an adult.

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
When I first moved here I had to show three forms of ID with my address in the library district to get the card...I showed my license, some bill, and a pay stub....

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
You can only get a card at your home library, but once you have it, you can use it at any library in the county. You'll need 2 or 3 forms of proof that you live in the town. A License and a utility bill are good.

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
Don't be embarrassed. How do they know that you didn't just move into the town? I got a new library card last September when I moved; it happens all the time!
As far as I know, you can only get a card for the town in which you live. My library has a good web site and it lists the requirements for getting a card, so I knew what to bring when I walked in there (I think it was two pieces of mail with my name and address on them).
Now, go read!

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
It's a rainy Sunday so I did some Googling for you (not much going on today!) and I found this from the Plainview Library web site:
"Library cards will be issued to Plainview-Old Bethpage School District residents ONLY."
So, that answers that question.
Oh, and the Bethpage Library is only open until 4:00 on Sundays. It does not list the requirements for obtaining a library card on the site.

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
I got one when we moved into our new house. I think my library is only open to residents of the school district, as well. I needed to bring a photo ID and I believe a couple of utility bills with our current address. I know I couldn't check anything out though for a few days until my library card came in the mail.

thanks for looking it up. Yeah, the Bethpage library website wasn't much help but you were! Thanks again.
I'm trying to be more fiscally responsible and not buy books but borrow them. Also I have no place to put more books!
I like to read on the train and can get through most books in a week or so.

Once you get your card at Bethpage, you can use it at any library in Nassau County though.

I went and applied for DH and I. Went to find the book I needed and they have to get it from another library.
It's ok, I'll wait a few days.
I should get my card in about a week.

You and me both! When I moved here, I got a card and have really taken advantage of it. I was looking for two books yesterday that they didn't have so I went to Borders and bought them and when I'm done, I'm donating them to the library.

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
that's a good idea. I could donate at least 20 books in my house. I'll ask them when I go to get the book.
Another tax write off!

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
just FYI - its the school district you live in - not the town. I know that the bethpage area has quite a few different SDs - so just make sure you go to your SD's library.
I pay $600 a year in library taxes - so I make sure that I use it! LOL

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
I even got my boys library cards.
I remember in Queens you were able to have your own card when you were able to write your name
so I was a little crushed when she said they could have it at any age I kinda wanted them to have that YAY moment, so I did wait for them to understand what it was to have a library card
and she said they didnt even have to "sign" their own card so I begged her to let them write their names on them before she laminated them (she let us )
eta: Even thoughI love their little "signatures" on their libr cards, I must say im shocked that the LI libraries have these little dorky "home-made" Cards, while the NYC libraries are state of the art professional cards !
can you tell Im a library goer ?

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
Most LI library cards are laminated, and some of them are actually quite nice. Some libraries also offer the "key ring" card that you attach to your keys and supermarket cards.

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
I am library lover, picking a district with a great library was very important to me. All libraries within each county can borrow books for you from other libraries. Our library has a great website with a feature that allows us to search the entire county catalog for items we want. We request stuff online & they email or call me to say they are in. I rarely purchase books anymore (mostly just reference books for animal husbandry or gardening) & I donated most of my personal library a few years ago. I have taken great cooking, computer & craft classes. I get great discount tickets for Splish Splash & other things through our library. Congrats on being a library patron!

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
Funny, I am an avid reader and I'm always buying..well now I'm sick of all that. Can't wait to take advantage of all my library has to offer. I used to live in Mineola and Bellmore and went all the time.

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
Just so you know..Plainview has the BEST hours...on Sundays open til 9 PM...DH and I converted once we saw the hours and the fact that you can request books online and you are emailed when they come in to come and pick them up...look around once you get in the library..my friends have started calling me "library" since I've grown to love it so much..haha...there are tons of programs and other opportunities there (yes, we were book buyers, too...now converted!)...enjoy your new library card!!!

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
Congratulations on getting your card!
I only got one about a year & half ago because I moved around a lot & never got around to it because I would just ask my husband to get things out when he went.
I used to live a few blocks from the library, growing up & got my card as soon as I could sign my name.
I love inter-library loan, and being able to check things out of other libraries & being able to l search the catalog on-line so I know if they have something before I go.

Re: A little embarrased to admit this
No worries, DH has lived on LI all his life but never got a card after he moved to a new place (AND he's a school librarian!), but there's no way I could live w/o one so we both got one after I moved out here Glad things went smoothly for you!
