A dumb question about going to the hospital...

Being as my DS was a scheduled c-section one day before I had him Chat Icon , I never thought to ask this
( not that it even really matters, my own curiosity)

Does the hospital you are delivering at have like a copy of your file or something, or does your doctor swing by his/her office or something to grab it on the way to the hospital , when you go into labor ?...I guess my real concern is that no-one is thinking I'm making it till next Tuesday for my sched-c and all this week there is a covering doctor on because mine is on vacation-how do they know anything about you, or does none of it really make a difference Chat Icon ) ...just curious if anyone else has ever asked this Chat Icon

That is a good ?. I am *guessing* though that this is probably the main reason for "pre-registering" so they can get a copy of your file in advance?

My doctor also has me bringing a copy of the Strep B test with me to show it was negative.

Re: A dumb question about going to the hospital...

The times I have been to the hospital, the doctor calls ahead so they are expecting me. I guess they fax something over, I'm not 100% sure, but its never been a problem. I am sure a covering doctor must have some kind of access to your doctor's files. The first time I went, DH went and registered me while they were getting me changed, hooked up to the monitors, etc.

Re: A dumb question about going to the hospital...

well we went and preregistered at 35 weeks --- at 37 weeks when i was sent to the hopsital from the perinatlist for an emergency c-section - my obgyn called ahead to the hospital and was there waiting for me... so im assuming that they had all the information they needed !

Re: A dumb question about going to the hospital...

When I was pg with DS I was supposed to have a scheduled c/s and my obgyn sent my file over to the hospital a week before the scheduled date. I ended up going into labor and had an emergency c/s before the scheduled one. I would ask your obgyn when they send it because you might go into labor after the office closes for the day. HTH and good luck.

Yes, the pre-reg should handle this, but call your L&D department to make sure all the paperwork is in. Chat Icon

Re: A dumb question about going to the hospital...

I had to send in pre-registration forms. However, my Drs. office/the Perintologists office and the hospital are all linked up through a network, so the hospital can pull up all my medical records from both places right online.

My Dr. sent the preregistration forms to the hospital beforehand so I didn't have to do anything

In know they had me do the pre-registration forms and from what I'm remembering, they were fairly generic...I'll have to ask when I go on Tuesday- My big concerns are that they know what my placenta previa history is and that I had a slight complication with the spinal last time ( OB thinks maybe they need to tone it down a notch this time because last time it went up too far and I had difficulty swallowing) All of these things I'm sure I will remember to tell them, but on the off chance that I don't , I was hoping it was noted somewhere Chat Icon

Re: A dumb question about going to the hospital...

The hospital only had the info I supplied them with by filling out the pre admitance form that was mailed to them. Then when I got there they asked me tons and tons of questions as I was screaming in labor.. Chat Icon

They didnt have any of my chart.. especially since my OB wasnt available so didnt my dd so had the covering doctor.

If your afraid of forgetting to tell them, i would jot it down on paper and pack in your hospital bag and make copy for dhs wallet.. and then just hand them when you get there.. that way you dont have to worry about it.

That's a good idea. I hate to say it, but working in healthcare myself (not with pregnant women though!) I've heard too many stories of doctors and especially residents not reading the patient's chart/knowing their history thoroughly. I think we are all planning on doing this anyways, but it's probably good to have at least one person besides your DH with you that knows your history/any concerns to tell the medical staff.

I'm an L&D nurse, we usally receive a copy's of a pt's prenatals around the 37-38wk mark sometimes sooner sometimes later. Being you are a scheduled c-section the hospital should definitely have your paperwork at least a few days in advance.

Re: A dumb question about going to the hospital...

I don't know HOW the hospital got my info. When I went into labor, my doctor's office had a different doctor covering for them. He called the hospital ahead and told them to expect me. The nurses said that they had the file faxed over to them, but I don't know how since my docs were out of town and it was a Saturday. Maybe the office staff was in the doc's office and sent it over. Dont' know, but they had it.

Re: A dumb question about going to the hospital...

LIJ had a copy of everything before I got there. The only thing they asked me do was fill out a Health Care Proxy. This time around..I am bringing them a copy.
