A different thank you card post...

What are your thoughts..

my 17 year old cousin graduated from HS. I couldnt attend the dinner (maybe 30 family members went, probably 6-7 different families). We couldnt attend because I had just had a baby but I sent my parents with a card and a check.

I just recieved the Thank you and was a little annoyed. It was a TY that already had a message written in side it (this didnt bother me) BUT it was filled out by my My cousins (the mother of my cousin who graduated) not the 17 year old who the gift was for.

His mother pisses me off... she lets her kids get away with murder. You are telling me HE couldnt write: "dear G and J" and "love V"??? give me a break, why bother writing a TY?? Things like this just make me mad because it doesnt teach kids any responsibility when everything is done for them

I know it was his mothers handwritting because she has perfect handwrtting and uses a ruler when she srites.

I agree. At 17, he is quite capable of writing a thank you card for any gifts he receives.

Re: A different thank you card post...

I would have been annoyed at that too- he's plenty old enough to write his own thank you's and she really isnt doing him any favors by writing them for him

thats great! I think they should. They need to learn that there are certain things you do. Im not saying that i expect a TY card, but in some way a thank you should be made by the person who recieved the gift, especially since we did not attend the dinner

At this dinner I was talking about they celebrated 3 of my cousins graduations (2 HS and 1 elementary) My cousin had her son (he is going into 6th) call us on the phone. We werent home but he left a message, he just said "thank you for my gift" and that was it, but he at least did it himself!

Re: A different thank you card post...

Since I was able to talk or write I either had to call family and friends or write my name on a thank you care for ANYTHING I was given as a gift.

It has really instilled in me a sense of thankfullness for everything I have been given

Re: A different thank you card post...

I always wrote thank you notes. At 13 I wrote TONS of them for my Bat Mitzvah and to this day I have yet to receive a thank you note from a Bar or Bat Mitzvah where the note wasn't handwritten by the child. Sure it was the same "Thank you for your generous gift and I am so glad you were able to share in my special day" sentiment from card to card, BUT, at 13 in my culture, when you "become an adult", you better start acting like one and be gracious. If a 13 year old can do it, a 17 year old sure as hell can. My kids will not get away with that.

Re: A different thank you card post...

That would bother me. My mom had me signing my own thank you cards as soon as I could write my own name!!

On a bright note- at least you got a card! There are kids out there whose parents dont even teach them to send thank you's!

Took the words right out of my mouth. I HATED writing TY notes, but my mom made sure I did each and every one of them, a few per night until they were all done. There is no excuse for 17 year old not writing them on his own, aside from a significant physical disability that prevents him from using his hands.

My 11 year old nephew has a severe learning disability. His 7 year old brother reads and writes much better than him. I can promise that when the 11 year old becomes a Bar Mitzvah, the very least he will do is write "Dear So and So" and sign his own name, even if my sister uses a preprinted message to make things easier for him.

Re: A different thank you card post...

lame.

the kid should have written out the card.

but from the sound of it, this is probably nothing new...

and seriously, this woman uses a ruler when she writes out her cards??

weirdness abound...

ETA:

Other side to this is at least you got a thank you.

I went to a 30th birthday, bought a gift and didn't get a thank you card at ALL.

I agree completely...if you are going to send a TY (which I feel is a dying practice Chat Icon ) at least have the recipient write it...who knows, you may just get another generation to write TYs!
