a bittersweet story about a gift for Dylan
My grandmother was one of 5 children. Grandma is gone now and her only surviving sibling is my mom's Aunt Lily, who was not the youngest. She is now over 90. Lily has always been very skilled with knitting. She made me some amazing sweaters when I was in high school . I really challenged her with the designs I would pick. My grandmother knew how to knit but she could not do a lot of the complicated stitches that Lily did.
When Dylan was born, Lily told my mom that she will make him a sweater. She said it would be for when he is a little bit older, so that he does not outgrow it too fast (that Lily is always thinking!). I was shocked to learn that Lily would still try to knit something given her age and health. Well, yesterday my mom got a voicemail from Lily saying that she knows that she promised Dylan a sweater but, "as you know I suffer from dizziness and my eyesight isn't so good. I started the sweater but I kept having to rip up sections that didn't come out right and I am not even strong enough to tear the threads. I kept having to tear it so many times and I got very frustrated. I am sorry, I won't be able to make the sweater. I will send some money for the baby's college account."
(I am not sure I understood the message as I do not knit. She was definitely talking about tearing threads).
So, Aunt Lily is done with knitting. Anyway, the difficulties she had made me realize how sweet it was that she even made the effort to make a sweater for Dylan!!!

Re: a bittersweet story about a gift for Dylan
That is so sweet that she wanted to make him a sweater.
I think that this is what she was talking about- When you make a big mistake while knitting, you take the loops off the needles and pull the yard, "wripping" out the stitches to a point below where the mistake was made. You then put the loops back on the needles and start over from that point. (I don't know if this makes sense to you ) At 90 years old, her hands and eye-sight aren't what they once were, and so what was once so easy is now a monumental task
You Great Aunt sounds like an amazing woman!
