9-10 mos old separation anxiety (BTDT Mom's)

Ok ladies........ here's the thing, my DD has now entered the stage of what i think is separation anxiety. She refuses to be put down anywhere and starts crying hysterically when we do. Her sleep is so disturbed now- it takes upward of 1/2hr-45 mins to get her down wherein she would wake up about 2 x during the night when she used to sleep right thru. I tried CIO for the lst time last night and she fell asleep within 35 mins of crying but still woke up after 4 hrs. I let her CIO again and she fell aslepp within 20 mins. So tell me, how did you deal with all of these changes?????? I am at a loss as to how I should go about the separation thing.

Thanks!

Has she reached a physical milestone (crawling, walking)? I ask because that would account for the sleep disturbance. It doesn't sound as much like separation anxiety as it does clinginess. Is she teethign? If you put her on the floor & play with her on the floor, will she still cry?

I can tell you that one of the reasons Peek-A-Boo was invented was to get babies used to the idea of "there she is, now she's gone & there she is again". I would play it with Maddie for 10 minutes straight....slowly walking out of the room into the kitchen...so I could finally heat up something for diner.

She started crawling about 3 weeks ago and is also teething. She is fine when I put her on the floor and play with her. The moment i walk away the whining turns into crying. I am just not sure how to go about it- i.e. CIO to sleep, let her cry when i walk away, etc. just looking for what other moms did.

I have started doing the peek a boo so i guess it is a start.

Thanks for your input Barb

You could try using humor. For example...start walking away, turn around & do a jump or a dance move and yell "Ta Da!", clap hands, walk further away.

If you go back every time she cried, I'd say she's doing a great job of training you.Chat Icon

Madeline has started with spearation anxiety- she'll be 9 months next week. I have a small place so I just talk to her as I am walking in to the other room. It doesn't stop her ompletely from crying but it settles her down a bit. I am also doing peekaboo. Its so heartbreaking, huh?

Re: 9-10 mos old separation anxiety (BTDT Mom's)

DD is 10 months TODAY and we are going through the SAME thing.. We have just started to put her in the crib rub her belly and leave the room when she almost out.. It has worked the past two night she only woke up once.. Before this she was sleeping completely through the night too. She will cry when I put her in the pack and play or bouncy but I do it and when she gets in I distract her and she usually calms down.
My Ped said that this is normal for 6-10 month olds to wake at night we all do but its if they can get themselves back to sleep. We were rocking her so when she would wake she was loooking for that so we had to stop that now like I said a quick rub on the belly and we are out of there!! Seems to be working GOOD luck!!
