 | Listening to music at work... I'm talking about headphones, ipods, etc not like having the radio on that everyone can hear.
Anyone else think this is really really unprofessional????
It's one of my hugest pet peeves! |

 | Re: Listening to music at work... I personally don't think it's unprofessional, but I also do it...so I'm biased.
I only put in one headphone in case someone's talking to (or about) me.

I don't see how it's any worse than those who have radios on or play music off their computer.

 | Re: Listening to music at work... I do it all the time, especially when people are talking around me and I need to concentrate on work.
But I am a designer. So, I think it depends on the field. If someone is an accountant in a conservative firm it could be a ltitle strange, I agree

eta: I used to listen to a small radio or itunes at work (very low) at my old job (in advertising). But where I am now, it is frowned upon...so all I hear right now is the hum of the lights....drives me nuts.

 | Re: Listening to music at work... Oh god, if I couldn't listen to music somedays I would go nuts.
But when I'm actually in my office I have a very solitary job, so it doesn't affect my work in a negative way.

I don't believe it should be allowed when you are a phone person or have to interact a lot, but I believe it can be a huge motivator for people.

 | Re: Listening to music at work... Possilby, maybe if you worked on your own at home, but I just don't think it's appropriate for anyone in an office setting. I work in a creative environment and have to work with designers and they constantly have headphones on and it's really offputting. They do it so no one disturbs them when they're working - but do you know how many times I'm disturbed when I'm working on something? That's the nature of working in an office! Sorry, I just think it's totally unprofessional and a really immature way to avoid contact with others. |

That may not be the reason why they wear headphones and listen to music (so no one will bother them) - it may be b/c it's been (scientifically) proven to help you concentrate and think more. Something about stiumulating some part of your brain or what not...

Usuk, on behalf of all designers out there--it's not to avoid contacts with others per se! It is to make sure that nobody interrupts the flow of creative juices when things get really good! It has nothing to do with not wanting to have contact with your. It just something we have to do sometimes to do our job which is different that being a marketing manager or an accountant. KWIM? We need to be in our own little world sometimes and concentrate on being creative!

Yes, it is so that no one disturbs them (and, actually, it's not just the designers) when they get into a groove - I've done some design work myself and I know what it's like. But I also write a lot for my job, which is similar in that sometimes you get going, and I'm constantly being disturbed in order to take care of things that come up. Working in an office means you need to deal with people - period - no matter what your job is. I don't take personal offense, I just think it's horribly unprofessional on the whole.

well, us designers, we ARE a horribly unprofessional and roudy bunch!!

But just so you know, I can always hear if someone is addresing me over the deadphones, so I am still there, in the office... I just don't want to hear, at that most important moment, just when everythign is finally looking just so, how so and so in the sales department didn't fill out the right form...
