6 mo. old decided to roll onto belly at night

I know once they're strong enough to roll both ways they are fine. But Tommy knows how to roll from belly to back but gets frustrated and starts screaming. Then this morning I turn the video monitor on amd he's on his belly, head turned slightly to the side, thumb in his mouth with 1 nostril to breathe! What do I do about this? His face is all squished. I keep going in there to check on him and I even moved his thumb out etc but he goes right back into this position....ugh!

Re: 6 mo. old decided to roll onto belly at night

My DS is 4 months and started rolling onto his belly to sleep. Unfortunately once they start there isn't much you can do. I roll him back but he rolls right over again. DS #1 did the same thing. We had his 4 mo. check up yesterday and my ped. wasn't concerned.

Ryan was rolling both way at 12wks and at that point I had to just go with it. Don't get me wrong - I was def. in there trying to adjust his head, but there was little I could do - it's not like I could stand over him all night and "fix" him.

DD did this at 4 months old.....it takes a few days, but then they figure it out. Since then, she only sleeps on her stomach - sometimes ever what appears to be face down!

DD rolled to her belly(and slept that way) at 10 weeks. She had good neck strength and started sleeping 12 hours a night at this point. I left her.

DS has been doing the same thing the last few nights...I think as long as he's turning his head to breathe he should be fine...they have the strength now to lift their heads and there is no way to stop them from rolling.

This is how my DC used to sleep also when they were around 6 months. Once they were rolling over to their bellies on their own there was nothing I could do about it.
Now they sleep with their faces to the side. I could never figure out how having their faces planted into the mattress was comfortable, and was a little unsure about it, but I wasn't going in there ever 15 minutes to roll them over.

my son used to roll over, get startled, and start screaming. we would have to go in and turn him! then eventually he started preferring his belly.

my daughter never had the startle thing. she is 6 months now and has been sleeping on her belly for at least a month, maybe longer.

i just let it go.

There is really nothing you can do. Eventually they learn to roll really well, and will sleep in all kinds of crazy postions. My DS pretty much only sleeps on his stomach, and has since he learned to roll over. Just make sure there is nothing in the crib.

Logan goes down with his head on the left side of his crib, laying horizontally ... I find him in the morning with his head on the right side, either perpendicular or diagonal to how he went down, with his his butt straight up in the air or face flat into the sheet. Its pretty funny. Chat Icon
