Re: POLL: Did you bank the cord blood?
We did.
We had just made an appointment to go to one of those seminars to learn more so we could decide if we wanted to do it or not but I unexpectedly went into labor more than 7 weeks early. We had to make a decision right then and there at the hospital and so we decided to do it.

Our reason was simple the cord blood can only be used by a sibling. Also the technology isn't advanced enough for it. At the time we were certain we were one and done.
this is not entirely true. there are certain circumstances where the child can use her own cord blood, and may be more opportunity in the future. This is why we decided to bank, and also because we plan on having more children.

This was our reasons for banking. We both have cancer in the family and thought that down the line you never know....

Yes, for both children with ViaCord. It's def. an expense, but for me, I couldn't not do it knowing there is a chance (potentially tiny) that doing this could save one of my children's lives down the road. The paymemt plans made it doable too (I believe for each child we did the 6-month payment plan of $325). My father did split the cost with us as his baby gift as well, but no matter what we would have found a way to do it.
ITA!! We did the 6 month plan as well and for the same reasons!

Re: POLL: Did you bank the cord blood?
We did not because there wasn't enough. They collected it but when it got to the facility they told us there was too little. We probably won't do it this time due to cost. I'd bank publicly if that was an option.

If you don't mind I would really appreciate why you did or why you didn't bank it.
I looked into it extensively. I felt that there wasn't enough backing it. For instance, they are unsure how long the cord blood is viable for. I read some say 8, some say 10 years. But you pay storage fees for longer.
Also, certain diseases would be in the child's cord blood, so they would not be able to use their own cord blood.
Sibling match info seemed to vary too from website to website.
The Cancer claim was of interest to me but I noticed at the bottom of their pamphlet there was a disclaimer about how it hasn't been proven yet (or something along those lines).
Whatever you decide, you should definately research beyond the cord blood banking companys websites to make your decision. I checked AAP review of it and a few other websites.
Good Luck! It's a tough decision.

I banked the cord blood for both DDs with ViaCord. I think of it as a resource and insurance policy that could possibly save my DDs' lives or their siblings if needed. Medicine is constantly evolving so, hey, ya never know!

Re: POLL: Did you bank the cord blood?
Yes, we banked both DS and DD's with CBR ( not sure if it is necessary to do with my current since siblings are generally matches, but we are looking into it)
I basically felt that it was a one time deal, and with medical technology advancing every day I'd rather not have any regrets in the future heaven forbid we should ever need it ( and hoping that we never do)
I never checked into public banks, so I have no insight into them

We did with DS and plan on with DD. I am glad we did it. DS has a rare blood type and although we hope he never needs it, we know he has it just in case.

Re: POLL: Did you bank the cord blood?
We chose to let it reabsorb back into our son. I didn't want him missing out on the guaranteed benefits for the slim risk that we might need it in the future. If you're interested in learning more about reabsorption, google has a wealth of info.

We donated... I figured it would go to good use and hopefully save a life plus we would still have access to cord blood should be ever need it in the future.

We did it for our DD as well for the same reason - we think of it as insurance - and plan to do it for all future dc's. You never know and I'd never forgive myself if we didn't and ended up needing it. Also, we could afford to do it - we didn't have to give up anything to do it so that definitely made the decision easy for us.

Re: POLL: Did you bank the cord blood?
Cutting and pasting from the last time I answered this hth
We decided to bank publicly after a lot of research.
My biggest reason for not privately banking is that the cord blood can almost exclusively only be used on a sibling- NOT on the baby it is from. The reason for this is that the blood from the actual patient already has a propensity for the disease- so the problem with reoccur. The only time this isn't true really is if it is used b/c of an injury that could use cells- not an illness- and the chances of that are sooooo low it's like a null point to me. (If you pay close attention to commercials on tv the blood is always saving the life of a brother or sister).
Speaking of chances- I read plenty of articles that dispute the ratios/ chance of use supplied by the cord companies. The likelihood of using the blood is SO extremely remote and personally there is absolutely no family history between myself and my DH to "up" that chance (and remember that's paired w/ the siblings only deal).
The other problems I have, in addition to the above, is that there is only enough blood saved for one treatment of a CHILD (as determined by weight I believe) and you are also "banking" on the hope that they eventually figure out how to multiply the blood- b/c in many cases this one dose is not enough. The same problem revolves around storage- right now they can't store it efficiently for more than 20 years.
This idea of what the future MIGHT bring is really the only thing that kept me interested in the blood at all. I would think to myself okay the chances of my children getting whatever disease is so remote, the chances of the blood working so remote, but maybe in the future (within the 20 years we have to store) they will figure out how to store it longer and maybe some more common uses for it- so maybe when I'm long gone and my son is a senior citizen he could get help for a more common problem of aging- maybe cataracts, alzheimers, etc. But in the end that maybe maybe maybe just wasn't enough.
Bottom line is that if in the tiny chance my son needs cord blood public banks are expanding by miles each day (ds'blood included)
So, that's why we decided not to bank privately.

Re: POLL: Did you bank the cord blood?
We banked both of our kids with CBR.
We were on the fence until
1. my midwife compared it to car insurance. The first year is equivalent to annual car insurance and then substantially decreases. We never plan on using our car insurance, but we still don't think twice about having it.
We still hope that we never have to use either.
2. My childhood friend's son had leukemia. They never banked and none of the siblings matched, but I never wanted to say "I should have"
If I have wasted the $3500 per child - so be it. My mortgage interest is 20K a year - property taxes 11K - we will be selling our house for a 50K loss. Compared to those numbers, peace of mind is a drop in the bucket.

Re: POLL: Did you bank the cord blood?
Not for our 1st but we did for our 2nd with Viacord. When we were having our 1st our OB's office was on the fence about it. 2 years later the practice had already saved several babies with their own cord blood and were all in favor of it. We also lost 2 children in our family(cousins) from a genetic condition so it was something that was an absolute must for us. May it be the biggest waste of money ever!

Re: POLL: Did you bank the cord blood?
Yes, we banked for both my DD and my DS with CBR.
As a matter of fact, we banked DS' cord blood AND cord tissue. My DH did a lot of research on the cord tissue, and they've already done some trials and have concrete evidence that it might be able to cure such common ailments as kidney disease and diabetes!
For us...we really couldn't *afford* to do it financially...but in my mind, we couldn't afford NOT to do it. If anything ever happened to one of my kids and I had opted not to bank the cord blood, I would really have a hard time dealing with that.
