My husband's family did this years and years ago. The young man who stayed with them for a year eventually returned to his own country and became a physician. They have remained friendly (albeit from afar) for over 20 years. It was a positive experience for all involved. Enjoy!

I did this as a student and we hosted students as well. It's something that I will totally do in the future when my kids are HS age and I will be in that mode.
I am still good friends with my host sister.
My aunt/uncle/cousins hosted a student from Russia and she ended up staying in the US , going to college, getting married and is now expecting. She is now a complete part of our family.

Very cool! I've considered doing that, but DH and I both commute... we wouldn't be home enough to be a good host family. Hope you have fun!

We had an exchange student from spain. it was interesting to say the least. He needed to learn bathing skills....so our whole house stunk!

I would connect with his counselor at the high school right away and let her/him know about your situation. They will give you loads of advice and help(or at least I would! )

Good idea. I fully intended to communicate with his teachers to find out what I could do to help him. I didn't think of the guidance counselor! I will do that. Thank you for the tip!

Interesting. I am sure in many cases it can be quite a cultural shock but I'm ready to tackle some of the not so pleasant experiences that come with it. Thanks for sharing!

How awesome! My family hosted an exchange student from Switzerland the year I was a Freshman in HS. He was a Senior and all the girls were hot for him! LOL It was great. We are still like family to this day!

I was just thinking of this last night. Well, thinking about it when my kids get, at least, a little bit older but probably more like junior high or high school. I definitely want to be a host family.

That is ridiculous. Students move into the district at all different times. I would not rely on a letter. Go up to Central Admin and speak to the superintendent face to face.
