Need help...1st grade teacher wants kids to write a letter

would you assume she wants it printed by hand or would a typed letter be ok?

DD's 1st grade teacher sent a welcome letter to each child. In the letter she gave her address and asked that each child write her a letter telling her about them. Of course my DD wrote a novel (I typed up what she wanted to say) and I was going to have her copy it out by hand, but now I am wondering if I can send the printed letter?

What do you think?

Honestly, maybe send both.

As a teacher, I want to see the writing development, both dexterity of the hands and development of the thoughts. I would want to see the spelling, sentence structure, etc of the child.

However, at that age, there is a lot of spelling errors and although it's great to see their phonetic abilities, there *may* be a need to see a typed version.

Do both! Send the "novel" typed out, and then have her write a simple note that she is capable of doing on her own (DON'T have her write out the one you typed!). Chat Icon

(I'm a 1st grade teacher, FYI!)

I would send the handwritten one..this way the teacher knows your child did it..she probably wants to see the writing, etc..and may even use them again at the end of the year to show growth.

I am a first grade teacher as well. I would have your child write a letter by herself, then if you want add the typed letter. I wouldn't worry about her spelling, if she has been teaching for a while, she can read anything, trust me, I can!! I am sure the teacher just wants to use the letter to see where all of children are at.

Handwritten. Lauren has to do everything handwritten. Typed I would assume you did it. L. only has one assignment per week to type something on the PC. If it's a summer project for the first week of school than hand write it.

ETA: also I was not allowed to help correct her spelling at all. First grade teachers want you to let the child write what they think, feel and how they sound out the words them selves (even if they are great readers and spellers). kind of like Junie B. Jones books.

Those of you who are saying handwritten - do you mean that the little girl writes out the NOVEL the mom mentioned, or another totally different one?

I strongly, strongly urge you (OP) NOT to have your DD write out the one you typed out! There is just no reason in the world for that other than to torture your daughter! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I really don't see why you wouldn't include the one you typed out (which probably has some really adorable stuff your DD had to say!) and then include another handwritten one. Chat Icon

I would assume the teacher means a handwritten letter. And I would also assume that since it is supposed to be a letter, that 1 page is sufficient. I would cut the novel down a bit.

Thanks for all the responses! After thinking about it for a few days I am leaning toward sending both from DD. I agree that it would be TORTURE for ME as well as DD to sit and have her write out what was typed. It would also probably turn into 15 pages since she writes so big! Chat Icon

I guess I will have her write a few sentences by hand and include the typed letter.

Thanks!
