got our 1st grade teacher assignment please read
My son is starting first grade in 2 weeks. Last year for kindergarten he went to private school due to the fact we have 1/2 day kindergarten and I needed a full day program. He went with a few others in our nieghborhood. Well............... Sammy is with the top first grade teacher  from what I hear BUT he is not with any of his friends. All of his friends from pre - K and KIndergarten are in the same class though. He said he cant be alone without his firends
Please give me some advice - he is now sad to start school knowing he doesnt have his friends with him and they are all togethr

Having switched schools a few times, I know it's hard for them. Other than focusing on the positive (new friends, great teacher), I don't have much advice.
For you, I can tell you he's expanding his circle of friends & will know the old friends & the new friends. He's not going to understand it but he only has to get through the first few weeks until it's routine & he gets to know everyone else.
I wouldn't mention the other kids are all together (remember the walls have ears as you talk about it on the phone).
Another way of easing into things is if there is an afterschool activity to sign him up for. Our community is huge on soccer. The only reason I have Maddie (who has already declared "I can't run on that field, I'll sweat") in soccer again is because she has 6 girls from her school on her team.

Thanks Barb for your advice. I know that he will be ok once he gets adjusted. I think I am more sad and nervous then he is. Sammy is just shy and has a hard time making friends thats why I wanted him with his kindergarten friends.

I know how you feel.
If this makes you feel any better, Maddie had a friend that was attached to her hip all through pre-school. This girl would cry when Maddie went on vacation & wasn't there.
When she moved up into another classroom, the girl's mother said "Can you believe they separated them?" Her daughter was beside herself.
I thought it was the best thing that could have happened to her. Her daughter made new friends & got more confidence. Same thing happened to my very, very, painfully shy neighbor growing up. Her parents were always very protective of her. When she was debating going away to college, they weren't going to allow it. I told them should encourage it. Eventually the daughter convinced them. I don't think I ever saw my neighbor so thrilled, telling us how her daughter took a road trip to a football game with a bunch of guys & girls.
Hang in there! We all feel like we're back in elementary school once our kids are there.

I guess you are right. I am thinking about how I would feel if it were me.. I would have been devasted. I am sure he will be fine

You can remind him that he when he started pre k he didnt know anyone either but then he quickly made friends.. and this will happen again in 1st grade.

I'm a PK teacher & we had a parent request that 3 friends stay together in 1 class & our principal felt she couldn't do it b/c then parents would be asking all the time, etc. I kind of agree....kids that age are young & are bound to make new friends. Before year end he'll be close with other boys & still have his other daycare friends. They can still get together after school for playdates, etc. Also in school I'm sure all the first grade classes are bound to do some things together so I'm sure he'll see them from time to time. I wouldn't worry, he'll be fine.

He'll be fine....
My girls get jumbled up all the time. Who's not in their class one year will be next year....
They make friends so easily at this age..Dont forget he'll get to see his buddies on the playground at recess.
