55+ Communities?

Hi Everyone,

Im helping my mother in law search for a condo in a 55 and older community. She'd like to stay in the 200-280K range and so far there are only a few communities I've found within this budget.

Courthouse Commons - Central Islip
Islip Landing - Central Islip
Bel Laurel - East Islip
Sunrise Village - Sayville

She really doesnt want to go further east than Sayville so this limits the search as well. I found a few in St James, but its too far north for her. She is still going to continue to work in Freeport, but all of her kids live out in suffolk so she would like to move closer to us. Though we dont want her commute to be too terrible.

Does anyone live or know anyone that lives in any of these communities? And if so, what is the deal with the taxes, common charges, etc. How is the area? I know Central Islip tends to get a bad rap, but is it honestly that bad?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 55+ Communities?

If she would consider going further west, Farmingdale has several 55+ communities, and is on the Nassau/Suffolk border, so she would be halfway between work and the family in Suffolk.

I am not familiar with the specific communities you mention, but if you have questions about 55+ in general, feel free to FM me! I would be happy to help with your mil's search, or just answer questions.

Re: 55+ Communities?

What is she looking to get out of a 55+ community? Just a place where there are no teenagers wandering around, and the streets and sidewalks are shoveled in the winter, and grass cut in the summer? Or is she looking to be very active in activities, clubs, etc?
My aunt and uncle lived in a 55+ community, but there were very few activities that I know of. However, my mom is in a different 55+ community, and there is a garden club, several political clubs, a board with President, VP, secretary, etc., movie nights, etc, etc.

Re: 55+ Communities?

I dont think the 2 in CI are strictly 55+. I know 2 people who live in Islip Landing and the are in their 20's.

yes CI is not nice. While those 2 communities are nice and they are near the court complex so they are kinda separate from neigborhoods it is still a not so nice town

I kind of agree. the immediate community is nice, but i would not really even want to shop at those stores (check out the CI walmart to see what i mean).

My mom was looking and I saw Bel Laurel in EI with her, and it was very nice, and in a nice area. She wound up buying further east in a more expensive townhouse community.
