i think the whole thing with getting pregnant on the pill is that it is either not taken EXACTLY the way it is meant to be or you are taking medication that interferes with the birth control. i mean, if you are on the pill you are supposed to take the pill at the same exact time every night but i don't think a lot of women do this just because of forgetting or it being inconvenient, so that can be a reason why someone gets pregnant (or they forget to take it for a day or two). also, if you are taking antibiotics or other meds it can make birth control ineffective. these are generally the reasons why women get pregnant on the pill, but if taken the right way everything should be fine!

Sorry to crash but my gorgeous niece was just born last Monday to my very surprised sister who was on the pill. She was shocked when she found out and asked the doctor how this could possibly happen. Apparently, it's not all that uncommon.

I was on the pill for 10 years and always had a clockwork cycle... Then I got VERY sick with the flu and totally skipped my period that month. I thought that was impossible being on the pill. I couldn't imagine that I was pregnant because I was sick almost that whole month so obviously there wasn't much  going on ... but it still made me nervous since I had such a regular cycle for the whole 10 years! I bought a pregnancy test and of course it was negative.... so my point here is ... was she very sick recently? That could make you miss your period and think you're pregnant!

I used to think this also. But my friend who was NOT ready to TTC and was unsure as to if she EVER wanted kids got preggo on the pill. She told me she was not on any other meds and took it everyday at the same time as per her alarm.
She made me realize that it really CAN happen bc believe me she did all she could to prevent it.

I didnt but my dh's best friend's fiance did- she was taking antibiotics at the time and they interfered with the birth control

Well correctly is taking it EXACTLY at the same time every day....so if you are a little off your pill can be too..
anyway my friend got pg on the pill. Ooppss!

I was never ever extra careful while on the pill and never got pregnant.. but I did get pregnant as soon as I stopped taking it.... however, I do know 2 different girls that got pregnant while on the pill and had beautiful healthy babies. Whether they missed a pill or took medication to affect it - i have no idea

I'd have to disagree. I will be in the 2 under 2 club....and while i was taking the pill religiously at the same time every day and did not miss a day. I was BF when i started it so they put me on a different pill(a low dose one). Of which apparently when you stop BFing it still works for most women, but some may get PG and some need to switch to a regular dose one. Since at the time I got the pill from them I was 6 weeks post partum and BFing and supplementing with formula, the dr was well aware of my situation and only after I came back PG again was I told that, oh yeah that can happen.

The pill is not 100% effective.
So even if you take it exactly correctly you can still get pregnant.
The chances are slim but it's not impossible.
No birth control- other than sterlization- is 100% effective.

My dr told me that 20-something percent of women still ovulate on the pill, so if you're not taking it 100 percent correctly, it can happen.
My good friend got pregnant on the pill, but she admitted that she wasn't too diligent in taking it.

About 10 years ago, I got pregnant while I was on the pill. I was also taking antibiotics at the time which I was told later diminishes the effectiveness of the pill. The pregnancy didn't end well

I got pregnant while on the pill. I took it at pretty much the same time every single night. I was having issues with the pill I was on so they changed me to a low dose one. Well apparently it wasn't strong enough and I stilll ovulated. That's what my OB thinks or she said that it's not 100% effective so there is still a small chance you can get pregnant even when taking it correctly.

this is very true! it's factual information.. the pill is not 100% effective. the ONLY 100% effective BC is abstinance.
except IDK what the last line means. sorry.
Also.... you can even get pregnant after having your tubes tied.

Thanks for all the advice and stories, ladies!
It's pretty crazy because of course she wasn't expecting it at all, but it'll be really cool for us to be going through this together... her first OB appt is on the 22nd so we'll see for sure by then!
Oh, and she set her cell phone alarm for every night at 11 pm to take the pill at exactly the same time each day, so it wasn't that. No meds or anything either. But I guess even a 1/1000 chance after 10 years eventually can catch up with you!

I didnt I was off it for a few months before I got PG, But I do know a few people who have gotten PG while on the pill... One of them forgot to take the pill a few times a month so thats probably why. But I have seen it happen.

I have to disagree. I did miss 1 pill (altho according to the insert that came with mine, 1 pill was still supposed to be safe), but then I didn't say I took it perfectly. It does happen. Just because it's not overly common doesn't mean that those it happens to are liars.

I only got pregnant once I stopped taking the pill.
But I do have a friend who got pregnant while on the pill but she was also taking an antibiotic that kind of cancelled out the pill.
Sometimes the pill won't work while you're on an antibiotic. Your friend should take that into consideration if she on any other meds.

Sorry crashing, but i still dwell over this. I got pregnant while on nuvaring. You leave it in for 3 weeks, so I didn't flub. I miscarried, but it does happen and it wasn't my fault, the thing is in me 24/7.
