wake or not to wake... a sleeping baby

DH & I took a breastfeeding class and the lactation consultation gave us instructions on how to feed from 6am-12 so baby starts getting used to sleeping 'thru' the night. She encouraged us to wake the baby if she is sleeping to eat... mainly because you want your LO to be on your schedule vs you being on theirs. I thought this made sense, but friends with new babies say let sleeping babies sleep. I find this may throw off their body schedule if their schedule isn't the same. Any opinions?

Re: wake or not to wake... a sleeping baby

There is no schedule in the newborn stage.

Many people (including LC's) have differing opinions. Some say, feed the baby every 2 hours (cluster feed) during the day so that they go longer stretches at night. Some say feed on demand.

Really, you can't make a decision on how to do things until your DC is here and you see what kind of baby they are. It's better to have no "plan" then a plan that doesn't go your way.

I always fed DD on demand, and she was STTN by 9 weeks old.

a sleeping baby is a growing baby!! I wouldn't wake it in the newborn stage...this may work better a little older

I am not sure b/c I have no experience yet. However, I don't think I will wake Chat Icon when she is sleeping. I will just feed on demand, and see how it goes.

I fed DD on demand as well, and she was STTN at 7 wks and has been doing so every since, she's almost 6 months now.

But sometimes her daytime naps would last for 4.5 hrs, so I would wake her to feed her, if she napped this long.

ITA. I'm actually kind of surprised that the LC gave you that advice. Unless there's a weight issue, most of them recommend feeding on demand.

It's very common for EBF babies to start STTN later than FF babies. Personally, I wouldn't make any plans now. See what your baby is like and go with the flow. Chat Icon

ITA agree, we never woke DS and he was sleeping through the night by 4 weeks.

I would try to avoid plans, you just don't know what will happen. I planned to EBF my son and then had supply issues and had to supplement with formula. I never considered that I would have an issue BFing and with the hormones after birth I had a week long meltdown. I was able to build my supply and work up to EBFing, but those first 6 weeks were tough.

Better to go in with no plan, informed but understanding that nothing is "the right way" until it is "right" for your baby Chat Icon

Re: wake or not to wake... a sleeping baby

I always agreed as well as went on the " don't wake a sleeping baby". Its what I did with my 1st.

This time with two and the plan to bf, I am being told to wake the other and feed both at same time to get them on a schedule. Otherwise I will be a slave to them and no sleep at all! Lol!

I feed on demand, but my baby is a sleeper and sometimes my boobs are so engorged and painful, I will wake her up to eat. She has gained a pound in 10 days, and only wakes once in the night, so I must be doing something right. Each baby is different, so go with the flow with your own baby.

I was told not to let my son go more than 3 hours from start to start of each feeding because he was very underweight. In retrospect, I do not believe that waking him so often was a good idea. He would have gotten enough on his own. I will not wake my next baby.

And I agree with the other posters - you really can't plan anything until your baby is here.

My baby is on a 3 hour schedule, but that's because he's in the NICU and they are really strict about feeding every 3 hours so that baby gets enough calories and gains weight.

They specifically told us, baby is on a 3 hour schedule while here at the hospital, but when you get him home, no schedule. So that said, I will feed on demand once he's home.

DC had no schedule until after 3 months. Let newborns sleep as much as they want. When they're hungry they'll let you know!

I have no experience with this. I can tell you about my sister's experience. Once she figured out her daughter's schedule, she would wake her up for a feeding just before the baby would wake up on her own. She found that it took longer to calm the baby if she woke up hungry.

Again, I have no experience with this. I'm just going to play it by ear.

when the babies are only a few days old they can be jaundice and if you are BF you may need to wake them to eat to help with the jaundice. otherwise- no, i have 3- never woke any of them to eat. when they need something, they let you know.

Not a fan of waking sleeping babies at night. When I was trying to put my DD on a schedule (after 6 weeks old) I woke her every 3 hours during daylight ONLY.

I agree with this and will be trying this. I believe in waking them during daytime only to try and get them on a schedule. NEVER will wake at night. I've seen this work for MANY babies - the waking during day...they go longer at night.

Re: wake or not to wake... a sleeping baby

I never woke up either of my children. They both slept through the night from day 1. So many people told me to wake them but I never did. They will eat when they are hungry.
