Fido's Fences questions
Do you have them or know anyone who does? How do they work and DO they work? Thinking ahead for a home I am interested in.

Re: Fido's Fences questions
My BIL has one and 3 of his neighbors have them. They do work
I consider BILs dog to not be overly intelligent so I was wondering how she would do with the training. But she did great. It took a week for her to really GET it. THen they kept up the training flags a little longer.
Their next door neighbor has it too and the dogs stay in their yards.
ETA: After you have it installed the trainer will come and work with you. They set the frequency and the intensity of the shock based on the dog.
Then they "train" the dog by setting up flags just INSIDE the "fence" line. As the dog gets older/larger you may have to up the intensity of their shock.

Re: Fido's Fences questions
everyone I know that has installed this hated it. if your dog is inclined to chase anything that may enter the yard (squirrls, cats, birds etc) they will run out and ignore whatever warning they get.
Problem is, in the moment they ignore it. when its time to come back, they aren't in chase mode and won't come back on your property. IMO i think they system is really bad for this reason
I think there was a thread on the Pets board about this awhile back maybe you can X-post to there for a more advice

This is what i have heard about cats. And stubby is always on the hunt so that is my greatest fear.

Re: Fido's Fences questions
I know two people who have had their Labs get out when they were on the prowl for a female in heat in their neighborhood. Once they got far enough where the shocks ceased, they had no reason to return.
Someone else had their dog attacked by a stray aggressive dog in the neighborhood. It only acts as a deterrent your dog leaving your property and does nothing to dogs that want to get in.
My neighbor has one, front yard, and it scares the crap out of me because the dog charges anyone who comes near the house. It only stops when it comes within inches of the curb. Poor Brinkley almost peed himself the first time it happened when I was walking him.

Re: Fido's Fences questions
The problem with the invisible fence is that it doesn't keep anything OUT of your yard. A stray dog, stray cat, prowler, whatever....they are not deterred in any way whatsoever.
Some dogs are also either too stubborn or too dumb or just too tough to care about the shock. My sister's dog was one of the dumb ones....

Re: Fido's Fences questions
Sounds like you've already decided but I figured I'd share my opinion anyway! I've had one in the past and it worked great. We had a yard that could not be easily fenced so we put in an electric fence. My dog learned the limits within the first week. There were flags up at first so she knew where she couldn't go past. We used it for like 10 years and never had a problem. There have been a few threads on Pets about this. They might be able to give you more info.

Re: Fido's Fences questions
I know you made up your mind but just in case here's my experience. We don't have Fido but the Invisible Fence Brand. I love it. It worked out great for my two labs (only one left). Both dogs trained quickly and never tried to leave the property.
We live in CT and have 2 acres. There was no way we could fence the entire property. Most of my neighbors also have the invisible fence due to property size. We
