Re: Town of Huntington - big vote tomorrow!!!

the NO side...

I am writing to advise you of a very important issue and upcoming vote in the Town of Huntington that will adversely affect how our Town is governed and jeopardize outstanding quality of life. While I fully understand the timing of this vote comes during the busy holiday season, I am respectfully requesting that you take a moment to read the following and join me in voting NO in this vote.

On Tuesday, December 22, a special referendum vote will be held in the Town of Huntington to consider drastically changing the way in which the Town is governed. Specifically, the referendum calls for the establishment of a ward system in Huntington. If approved, our Town would be broken into four separate wards, each represented by an individual Town Board member. The longstanding practice of electing our Town Board members through an "at-large" system would be abolished.

Here's why a ward system is inappropriate for Huntington:

- The introduction of such a system would increase the cost of government as a result of the need for additional resources and the impact of districts competing for resources.

- Ward district lines will be drawn according to population with no regard to school, fire and water districts; therefore communities will be divided. Furthermore, we have no idea how these lines will be drawn.

- Under the existing at-large system, residents are represented by four council members. Under a ward system, a resident will be represented by a single councilperson assigned to their ward, thus eliminating 75 percent of their representation. Therefore, three council members will have the power to adversely affect your community and you would have no recourse to challenge these decisions.

- Currently two members of the Town Council are up for re-election every two years. Under a ward system, the councilperson in your ward would be up for re-election every four years.

I wholeheartedly agree that the timing of this vote is most inconvenient. Unfortunately, the proponents of this referendum intentionally withheld submitting their petitions to the Town Clerk to force a vote during the holidays - a time when voter turnout is likely to be extremely low. But with your help, we can defeat this ill-conceived referendum and retain the longstanding practice of electing our leaders at-large.

Please help to Keep Huntington Whole on December 22 by voting NO. You may vote at your regular polling place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

the Yes Side

Voting for one person who lives near you, represents you and is accountable to you is better than voting for four people none of whom may live near you, represent you or be accountable to you. Electing a representative is the American form of government

They tried councilmatic districts in Brookhaven about 10 years ago.

In some ways it is better, but in many ways it is not.

Shoot, the vote is today already? I kept meaning to figure out how I was going to vote, but haven't had a chance yet. I get the point, but I'm still unsure which system would be better. How are other people voting??

I'm not in Huntington but I've seen the "Keep Huntington Whole" signs. I was wondering what those were all about.

since you asked....

A Ward System...
Will divide the Town of Huntington into four ward districts and one
councilperson would be elected every four years from each of those wards

A ward system will raise government costs
The introduction of the ward system would increase the cost of government as a result of the need for additional resources and the impact of districts competing for resources.

A ward system will divide communities and districts
Ward district lines will be drawn according to population with no regard to school, fire and water districts; therefore communities will be divided.

A ward system will decrease your representation by 75% - NOT INCREASE IT
Right now Huntington residents are represented by four council members. Under a ward system, a resident will be represented by a single council person assigned to their ward, thus eliminating 75% of their representation.

A ward system limits your electoral choices
Currently 2 members of the Town Council are up for re-election every 2 years; under a ward system, the council person in your ward would be up for re-election every four years.

Interesting. I heard pros and cons on each side. I ended up voting with my gut. I wonder how it'll turn out...
