anyone made a bday cake for DC using a Wilton cake pan/instructions?
Im going to attempt my very first for DS bday. Its Thomas. How hard are they for a novice cake decorator? Any tips?
The cake pan is up for grabs (free if you pickup, FM me) if anyone wants it when DS bday is over, 9/14.

Yes, I've made 2 of them (1st and 2nd b-day). The ones I've made have been very easy (but time-consuming) and they give you the step-by-step directions right on the back of the insert (or online if you need). And you can usually find most of the supplies needed in Michael's/AC Moore/Wal-Mart.

Agreed. I made DD's Ladybug Cake for her birthday last weekend...it was messy and time consuming, but it came out great!!
The directions were pretty easy to follow...and like nbc188 said, if you pull the instructions from the pan, it tells you what you need (what colors).
My only suggestion is to buy extra of the red food coloring (keep your receipt if you need to return) as it was hard to get the red the right color...
Good Luck! Image Attachment(s):

You can totally do it. Here is the Mickey Mouse I did for DS 1st birthday. I did a practice cake the week before but that's it. Believe it or not the hardest part was the white background icing. Image Attachment(s):

I made this one Very time consuming ( thank goodness for my very patient DH ) but worth EVERY minute to see my DS's face light up when he saw it !

Re: anyone made a bday cake for DC using a Wilton cake pan/instructions?
I made Lightning McQueen for DS' 2nd birthday. It took a few hours but it was not as hard as I expected. I made the red icing with the "no taste" red b/c red dye has a really nasty bitter taste. The other colors that I needed less of (yellow, orange, blue etc.) I bought already made. I know, it is cheating but it worked! Also, I had an ice cream cake which was a good thing, because DS didn't want anyone cutting into McQueen!!

so wait...to everyone who has made one.....is the cake going to taste like @ss then???? The Wilton Icing isnt good? Which is what Im assuming the red is on the lady bug for instance?
Anything I can do to remedy that? Icing alternatives?

I did spongebob. I didn't use the wilton icing or cake mix, i used reg cake icing and the wilton gel food coloring kits.
Came out tasty and still looked great :)
it took me forever though to do all the stars!

Re: anyone made a bday cake for DC using a Wilton cake pan/instructions?
Use regular store bought icing, but use the Wilton colors...
Also, for the "black", I used the Wilton decorator icing in chocolate and dyed it black...that icing is good (super sweet, but good)..
Do NOT use regular food coloring for the red....that stuff tastes terrible!!! But the "no taste red" from Wilton really doesn't have a taste to it....
ETS - I used regular cake mix as well...
And if anyone wants the ladybug pan, FM me....

YUP!!! I used Pilsbury icing (it was on sale) and Duncan HInes cake (I wanted strawberry). You can use any cake mix...the instructions for the pan are pretty good about buttering / flouring the pan, so the cake will come out easy...make sure you do that, or it will likely be a mess!

Re: anyone made a bday cake for DC using a Wilton cake pan/instructions?
I've always used the Wilton Buttercream recipe and it has always been delicious. I wouldn't use the Wilton storebought icing, but make your own. The icing you buy in the cans is usually difficult to work with because it is thinner than the buttercream icing.
Here is the recipe: Buttercream icing
You don't HAVE to use clear vanilla, especially if you are adding color. They just suggest clear vanilla if you want your icing pure white, like for a wedding cake. But even if you need white icing for your cake the little bit of vanilla really doesn't change the white that much.
Also, definately use the Wilton colors. Regular food coloring is water based and it can break down, and change the consistency of the icing.
Here are 2 cakes I did:
(this one looks lopsided b/c it shifted when transferring in the car)
I've also done Blues Clues, Elmo, Batman. They are easy once you get the hang of it.
