DH is a hero (and a PSA about pools) - UPDATE!

Dh's office had a party today at one of the partner's houses. DH really didn't want to go and truthfully we haven't gone to the annual "pig roast" in years but I pushed him to get off his arse and make nice.

Within about 20 minutes of getting there, someone was meandering around the partner's pool and started yelling for help. I said what is it? There were only a handful of us there at that point - and as I asked, a man ran by me screaming that's my son!

I don't really know what happened, but apparently the man saw the boy lying face up in the pool. I don't know if he was swimming and just had trouble (he's 10 years old), if he just ate and got a cramp or if he just didn't know how to swim. All I do know is that no one knew what to do - except DH.

He was an EMT in Israel - he's never recussitated anyone but he knew what to do, thankfully. He ran over, instructed someone on how to push on the boy's chest, and he did mouth-to-mouth. It felt like an eternity - the little boy was turning blue, everyone was screaming and crying, but in a few minutes, he started coughing up water.

The ambulence got there 5 minutes later - the boy was breathing, but still unconscious, and they took him away.

I can't lie, I'm beyond traumatized - Alex was with me, and I don't think I've ever held her so close to me. She was crying the whole time for her daddy and just didn't understand what was happening. It did give me a very good opportunity to reinforce to her that you NEVER go in water without a grownup around.

So anway, that was our day. I'm so beyond proud of DH and so much more keenly aware of the dangers of water now Chat Icon

And ladies, PLEASE be so careful with your children at pools - I always thought to myself how does something like this happen, at a party, with so many people around? There was even a little girl in the pool with him and she didn't notice a thing! It just happened so quietly and yet so quickly, it was mind boggling and truly frightening.
-----------------------------------------------

Update: DH spoke to the father - the kid was transferred to CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) - he was kept over night last night for observation but they think he'll be released today. The best news - he's perfectly FINE! No problems whatsoever! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

He's shaken. This is a man who never shows emotion - I've never seen him cry in all the time I've been with him, and he's been tearing up here and there during the day, and Mr. Health freak, who won't touch anything with sugar, just left the house to buy "a tub of ice cream" so I know he's rattled. I think he's more concerned about whether or not the boy is ok, and whether he'll be able to live with himself if he isn't.
