4 year old refusing to go to bed
We are going through a very rough patch with DS. Unfortunately at this time he shares a room with his 18 month old sister. She is in bed by 8. His usual bedtime is 9/9:30. He would go in and be asleep within a few minutes. Lately he is flatout refusing to go to bed. He begs to sleep in our bed. He runs around, cries, whines, laughs and hides. There are times he doesn't fall asleep until 11pm. It is awful. I swear if they did not share a room I would make him cry it out in his bed. I feel like my hands are tied. It makes me feel like bad mom. We have tried a sticker chart/reward system. Worked for like 2 days. I need help! Ideas please

Is there any way you can push her bedtime back a little and move his up a little so they are going to bed at the same time? I know it might not be ideal, but maybe DS will adjust better if they are doing their bed time routine together??

Re: 4 year old refusing to go to bed
Unfortunately I can;t have them go in at the same time. Tried it and it was a disaster. They keep each other up! She won't go to sleep if she sees him. Just wants to chat and play It would be amazing if t worked! Thanks for the idea though, I appreciate it.

yuck!! Okay, since that's a no-go, what about extending his bedtime routine a little bit to hopefully get him a little more tired so he goes in more willingly? Have a little more "relaxing time" with dim lights, low noise, calming activities (no toy playing, just reading a book, coloring, puzzles)
Good Luck !!!

Re: 4 year old refusing to go to bed
what about putting him to bed at 8:30? is he overtired and that's why he's fighting it so much?
as the PP said, what about quiet time on the couch for 30-45 minutes prior? watch a movie or something with lights down.

Re: 4 year old refusing to go to bed
Thanks girls! This is actually exactly what we do! Around 8/8:30 he is in pjs and it's mOvie time on the couch. Lights off, blanket etc. Once his show is over the battle begins:(. I'm at such a loss.

Re: 4 year old refusing to go to bed
Is he still napping? It might be time to drop his nap, if he is. We recently dropped DS' and now he is out within 5 minutes of putting him in bed where before he would goof around till 10.
Also, I've read that movies or tv actually have the reverse effect of winding kids up. Maybe replace movie time with snuggling and reading or singing as others have suggested.

4 year old refusing to go to bed
My sister got ny nephew a traffic light clock - he isn't allowed out of bed when its red. Super Nanny says they want attention - don't give it to them. Just pick them up the 1st time and say, "Its bed time, good night, I love you". After that, just pick them up and put them in bed and walk away until the next time. I have also seen her sit by the bed and take a "step" back every few minutes until mom was out the door and DC was sleeping. Good luck.

Re: 4 year old refusing to go to bed
Thank you for the ideas. He hasn't napped since he was 2. I thought after starting school he would be exhausted but hasn't been the case yet.

Re: 4 year old refusing to go to bed
Tonight was awful at first BUT at 9 I busted out the Melissa and Doug magnet chart my MIL had bought for Christmas and I explained it to him. If he gets 7 magnets he will get a prize. Toy, snack, special trip etc. He went to bed without TV or anything and was out cold in 5 minutes. Praying it continues!

Re: 4 year old refusing to go to bed
Sounds strange but we made bedtime a game for a while. Could you do that? We have a tickle troll - who looks like Sully from monsters ink but is purple, has wings and a tutu (so not scary). He comes and tickles little girls or little boys who doesn't stay quietly in their beds. Then (pick their favorite character) will come and take you to fun places in your dreams, but the only way to see x character is you MUST be asleep. For my girls it is tinker bell or a certain princess. They won't come if they stay awake and so they must go to sleep for them to see whoever it is. It seems to work most night. I found by making it a game they were more cooperative and the rush to try and go to sleep most nights.
