4 or 6 months for solids and what to start with
When do you think solids should be started? What do you start with?

Re: 4 or 6 months for solids and what to start with
For my DD i started at 4 months she wanted the food she was always going for other people food so I knew she was ready for it. We started with oatmeal cereal to get use to eating then we went to step one baby food probably bananas
DS we tried at 4 months and he wanted nothing do with it. He really didn't start taking any solids till about 6 months. Started the same with I did with DD
ETA: I am pretty sure that most say wait till 6 months now but my dr gave me the go ahead at 4 months

I started at 4. Everyone will have their own opinion and its honestly if the baby is ready. If the baby is not showing interest in food the experience will be stressful. So its def one of those try and see and if not wait a bit.

6 months with DD and 5.5 months with ds. Both started with orange veggies.
The current suggestion is 6 months, as the gut is not fully formed until then. Additionally, there are markers to look for-sitting unassisted, loss of certain tongue motions, showing an interest in food.
There's also very little nutritional value to baby cereal. You're better off waiting until baby gets used to eating a bit, and mixing baby food with things like quinoa, brown rice, lentils, etc.

Re: 4 or 6 months for solids and what to start with
I considered the cereal just "practice" for her to see what the texture of solid food was like and practice eating.
She was still getting her nutrition from the formula

4 or 6 months for solids and what to start with
I was excited to spoon feed him but also slightly clueless as a FTM so I just bought a jar of pureed apples one day when I was food shopping and gave them to him lol. Then afterwards I was told about starting cereal or veggies first, so we kind of went backwards... but it all worked out.

4 or 6 months for solids and what to start with
I started at 6 months. There were conflicting thoughts on when to start though my Pediatrician was adamant about waiting until 6 months. I also thought that there was no harm is waiting but could potentially be harm in starting too early, if "open gut" is real. As it was, my son wasn't really ready. I did not want to start cereals as I didn't see the benefit of them. We started with fruits and veggies.
My son is now 13 months old and eats everything I put in front of him, but he's still not had cereal!

Re: 4 or 6 months for solids and what to start with
We started just over 5 months. We probably could've started earlier- she was showing all signs that she was ready. She could sit up unassisted, she mimicked chewing, showed interest in solid foods we were eating and even tried to grab it from us. We started with oatmeal and it was a waste. She didn't like it and I wound up wasting breast milk. We moved onto pureed veggies after a few days, then from there fruits. I think we started with sweet potatoes and carrots first.

Re: 4 or 6 months for solids and what to start with
Stared around 6 months with all 4 - started on cereals, then some veggies, then fruits. 2 are picky eaters and 2 are not. My advice is once you start food the sooner you introduce them to regular food the better.

Re: 4 or 6 months for solids and what to start with
Started at 6 months with both DSs, no cereal for us, directly to solids. I think ds1's very first thing was steamed sweet potatoes cut in sticks, then avocadoes cut in big chunks so it was easy for him to grab them and then little by little I started feeding him the same things all of us were eating (at around 8 months or so). With ds2, I started offering the same things we would eat right away. The only things I avoided with both of them was honey and whole nuts (unless they were some type of nut butter. Like a previous poster said there are markers to look for that can tell u they're ready. It's so much fun seeing them studing what u put in from of them, the texture, the vibrant colors, it's amazing how much they can learn from foods. Oh don't be scared to try with different spices, they surely appreaciate it.
This is a great website if u wanna read more...

My ped said 6mos. System not mature prior. She told us to skip oatmeal and cereal and focus on orange foods first, I actually started with avocados and banana and then moved along.

This exactly. The first cereal my DD had were Cheerios when she was nearly a year!

6 months. No cereal. I prefer baby led weaning over purees.

My doctor actually suggests that you do not skip oatmeal as it is a source of iron and it is being found that many more kids become anemic without it. I started at 4 months with my DS only because he has reflux and it is helpful to keep liquid down with the solids. Otherwise i would have waited until 5 months.

started at 4 months with oatmeal. Skipped over rice cereal because it's binding. She hated the cereal and we went right to fruits and veggies at about 4.5 months
ETA: She started with green veggies, then orange, then fruit. I wanted her to try the yucky stuff first haha. Tried each food for 3-4 days before switching to another
