37w appt update - can I get your thoughts?

So I had my 37w appointment today. For those who remember my Chat Icon was measuring over 6lbs at 32w and 8lbs 5 oz at 36w. My doc wanted me to do the 3hr again just to make sure I don't have GD, which I did yesterday and all is fine. So, she wanted to discuss my options for delivery considering there is a chance he could be very large but he is in a "grey" area right now - not through the roof large but borderline.

So my options are:
-Wait and see what happens and attempt to have him on my own
-Schedule a c-section for 40w. Typically she would do it at 39w but she will be on vacation (Chat Icon ) and because at this moment there is not an overwhelming medical reason to do it (unless he continues to grow at an alarming rate) she won't do it earlier than 39.

I am absolutely terrified of going into labor and then not being able to deliver him on my own and am concerned about birth canal trauma because of his size and having to have an emergency c-section. She said if it scheduled and I wind up going into labor I can opt to still have the c-section. Is this what you would do? Schedule it and if he is not here by 40w have the csection, and if I go into labor on my own decide then?

Thanks for listening, I hate the unknown and really expected her to have a more clear cut opinion today.

PS. She did an internal today and yowzer! I saw stars. 1cm dilated.

I personally would wait it out and try to deliver him on my own. Women's bodies can do amazing things when it comes to birthing a baby.
Ultrasounds are an estimate, a very rough estimate and I don't know the odds of you having a 10-11lb baby probably are pretty small.
That said you have to do what you feel comfortable with. C-section is an absolute last resort for me so that's why I would wait it out but you may feel differently.

ITA.......... Those ultrasounds can really be off, just see how many moms on here were told the baby was going to be XX and they had a c-section and the weight was off by a ppound or more.

You would be amazed at what our bodies are capable of doing. My midwife has delivered NUMEROUS babies over 10lbs, naturally I might add and had no medical complications or problems such as shoulder dystocia or episiotomies etc.

This being said, being able to deliver the baby vaginally also depends HEAVILY on your practitioner, some are VERY QUICK to push for a c-section....

Did your OB seem to have a preference or try to steer you either way??

I would have the same concerns as you. If it were me, I would probably schedule the csection and take it from there.

For me, I have other medical issues (fibroid, back problems) that also make the case for a csec for me. So my dr scheduled it today.

katie i think you know what i am going to say but i will put it out there anyway Chat Icon

i was in the exact same situation as you. DS was measuring at 8 lbs 12 oz at 38.5 weeks. the doctor said that could have gone a pound either way - which meant he could be bigger, and close to 10 lbs.

my biggest fear was going through labor, pushing, and not being able to get him out due to his size. i did NOT want to be exhausted by labor, because i knew that would just make the c-section and recovery that much harder.

having a c-section was the best decision i could have made for me and my DS - although he ended up only weighing 7 lbs 10 oz., the doctor did say that his head was "large" and that still could have prevented him from descending properly into the birth canal. i'll never know for sure, but i felt confident that i had made the most informed decision.

because i didn't have to go thru labor, i was not at all stressed when DS was born and i had an amazing recovery. i was 39 weeks and 4 days when he was born.

i am not telling you what you should do - this is major surgery, after all - but i wanted to give you the BTDT perspective Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

good luck!! either way i can't wait to meet your little Chat Icon

No, she definitely is not trying to steer me either way - she wants it to be a decision DH and I make together and are completely comfortable with. I love this about her because I know many doctors would say do the c-section and call it a day because it is easier on them. On the other hand, a small part of me wished she had a stronger opinion so that I felt more confident in my decision either way because I trust her so much (which is why it is so important to me that she winds up delivering me - she said if I wanted the c-s at 39w one of her partners could do it). But the fact that the csection can't happen before 40w for her to do it (unless I elect to have it if I go into labor before then) makes me think I just have to "wait and see" for now. If this little guy decides he wants to pick his own birthday, I guess I will have to play it by ear. Doesn't he know that mommy likes to plan?? Chat Icon

If I do have the c-section at 40w, he will be born on our anniversary.

Thanks LB. I know you just went through this exact same thing and had a great experience with the c-section which is really reassuring. I feel like because of my anxiety level this may be the best bet for me as well, but knowing that I have to get to 40w for it to happen only adds to my anxiety because I am still terrified to go into labor on my own and then have to make the decision. Darn doc and her vacation schedule! I am convinced my water will break as the doc's plane is pulling away from the gate. Chat Icon

That's such a tough decision. Chat Icon I'd probably try to labor on my own and if it wasn't progressing, I'd get a c-section. I can definitely see why you may lean towards scheduling one though. Good luck with whatever you decide. Chat Icon
