Spin-off - Do as I say Not . . .
I am completely !!
Today I saw a K-9 unit with the dog locked in the car and the officer nowhere to be found. The dog was in the car for no less than 20 minutes w/out his handler. (I have no idea how long total, but I'm betting it was longer than one hour).
I got back to my office and called PD and asked to be transferred to K-9 unit. I asked to talk to Sgt in charge and was told he was in court. I explained I was calling to complain about the dog in the vehicle and gave the officer on the phone the K-9 unit #. Guess what??? It was the Sgt's car!!!
Then she told me it was their policy to leave the dogs in the car!
I am NOT an animal person by any means. I don't have a dog or a cat and that is very unlikely to change in the future, but I am still over this.
The average person leaves a pet in the car and a bystander calls PD and wham! a ticket, and here the K-9 unit has a POLICY to leave the dog in the car unattended.
The officer on the phone assured me that the dog was OK b/c she was sure the car was running (hello, carbon monoxide) with the AC on and the windows open, and that the car was equipped with an alarm which would notify the officer if the car stalled or the temp got too high. Somehow, I'm just not reassured, I'm just truly .

It's not like it is 90 degrees outside. It is a pretty chilly day, I am sure the dog is just fine!

Re: Spin-off - Do as I say Not . . .
thats a little disturbing. but thankfully its cool outside today and it can;t get to hot in the car.
I'm sure aspca would be all over it if the police were doing something wrong.
you could always call them. I think they have to look into everything called in.

Re: Spin-off - Do as I say Not . . .
So I guess I should no longer call police non-emergency for dogs left in cars?
Not to worry. Even though it's inhumane, I'm sure there is some law on the books exempting them from leaving their dogs in cars.

Re: Spin-off - Do as I say Not . . .
that poor dog
yes- it isn't 85 today - but my car got pretty hot sitting in the parking lot for 10 minutes
those dogs are trained and lots of time and $$$ goes into that - they should be treated like GOLD for the services they perform!

Re: Spin-off - Do as I say Not . . .
The handlers get very close with the dogs, they are their partners. It is very cool today, the dog was probably just fine.
I have 2 dogs and they are treated impeccably, they are like my kids. I would like to think that the right thing is being done and have faith in this dog's handler.

Re: Spin-off - Do as I say Not . . .
The car could have been running with the remote start on so that the A/C and everything was on... and there are remotes that beep when the car shuts off, I have one... I guess I'm in the minority here but I don't think its a big deal...JMO

Re: Spin-off - Do as I say Not . . .
I think the Law does not apply to them either. The dog probably got trained to stay hours in the car with no ventilation.
The really question....did the dog have a headset to call it's "master" in case the AC is now longer working and carbone monoxide is sipping through the trunk area?
Oh wait, isn't it illigal to let a car running unattended? Another good question.

Re: Spin-off - Do as I say Not . . .
I'm SOOO staying away from this one! I have no knowledge on K9 procedures, so I can't give any facts for this thread. Sorry.
But, I do have to say....those dogs cost tens of thousands of dollars and I don't think the officer would take any chances if he thought the dog would be harmed in anyway. I know our (NYPD's) dogs are left in running air conditioned cars for up to an hour or so in the summer and heated in the winter....but I have no idea what the actual procedure is during the milder weather like today. And, obviously we don't have to worry about anybody trying to steal the dog b/c they would lose an arm if they even tried.
So, that's all I have. Carry on.

You are not in the minority here. I agree with you, the whole thing seems to have gotten a little out of hand here. Original post said in the car for 20 minutes and the windows were cracked. Even if the car was running, there would be no carbon monoxide biulding up in a car with windows open.

Ya know Jess, sometimes . . . . .
what prompted me to write this post is that every single year at the beginning of the summer Newsday puts out a warning regarding leaving dogs in the car while you "run" into the supermarket for 10 minutes. It always includes things like how fast the temperature rises in the car, how leaving a window open is insufficient, and how people should leave pets home.
I was completely taken aback by what I saw, and it upset me. BUT, what put me over the edge, and pushed me to actually write and say I saw a dog left in a car was the fact that when I called the K-9 unit I was told it was POLICY to leave the dogs in the patrol cars. That just makes me and .

I applaud you for taking the time to call about something that concerned you. It would concern me, too. Some people may not care but I don't see what's wrong with holding the police department accountable to the public on any issue.
