30 years ago vs. today

hmm speaking of 30 years ago... I was looking at the real estate section in today's newsday, and on one of the pages they have an excerpt from August 11, 1976..

A few examples:

DEER PARK: Tender loving care has been given to this young 3 bedroom, 2 bath ranch. Hurry! $38,990!

EAST MEADOW: Ranch $29,990, starter home, full basement, detached garage, lo taxes.

EAST NORTHPORT-COMMACK: 3 bedrooms, brick ranch, private half acre, large eat-in kitchen, formal dining, 40' finished basement, in-ground pool, patios, sprinkler system, extras. $58,000.

HAUPPAUGE: Colonial, 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, fireplace, in ground pool, finished basement $55,000.

What do you think these houses would cost today?

Let me know if you find out, that would be really interesting to know.
If the house prices were that low, how much could the taxes have been?

My parents purchased their home in Kings Park in 1972 for $36,000. 4/5 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, partial basement, .25 of an acre. today that house is worth about $590k. Here is a link to the same model house - this is right around the block from where i grew up! This one was very nicely redone though. I wish i knew what my dad made then - but also - kings park was the middle of NOWHERE back then!!!

House

ETA My mom sold the house 9 years ago for $225k.

I know, they did a great job rennovating that house though! there doesnt seem to be much of the original things that we had growing up - like the wood panel in the family room and the kitchen and bath are so nice in that home. What's funny though is I loved my house so much growing up that the house i ended up purchasing looks so similar to it....

I just found another one - much cheaper but looks like it was redon in the height of the 80s... so you can still get my old house for $475!

Same house - but 80's style!

Re: 30 years ago vs. today

My parents bought a levit cape in the 70's They paid either 30 or 32,000.00 for it. My Grandfather who bought a house in merrick right after the war (also a cape looked like a levit cape) paid 7000.00 for it and was DISGUSTED that my parents paid "that much" for a levitt cape!

Well in 2005 I paid over 400K for my house and its a LEVITT CAPE! Could you imagine if my grandfather were alive today and saw how much we paid for our house! Chat Icon

probably 10x more than then.

and it's really not relative at all. my parents bought their house in 1981 and it cost 2.5 times what my father earmed a year (my mom was a SAHM). DH and can ONLY DREAM of finding a house that costs 2.5x of BOTH our salaries!

I bought my home 28 years ago, brand new and spent $39,900. My taxes were around $2,000. My house is now worth around $389,000 and my taxes are over $7,200!

Forgot to mention I live in Holbrook.

Yes, interest rates were sky high at one point during the late 70s-early 80s I believe.

when there was a recession in the late 80s, prices of homes went down.

and interest rates were higher, but 10% a year on $30K is only $3K, but 10% on $300K is $30K...thats some difference!

believe me, a high interest rate is a high interest rate no matter what..people were struggling with that back then. And back in the early 80s it was 17 and 18%.

what is the ratio of SAHM's today as compared to back in the 70's and 80's?

I bet it was a lot higher back then. the point is, women had the option of staying home with the kids, today - not many have that option around here.

I don't know about that on Long Island. Both my parents and DH's parents worked when we were kids and I knew very few people in Commack at that time who were stay at home moms.

You're absolutely right. In 1981, my husband made $26,000 per year and, even though, my mortgage was much smaller than mortgages today, it was still a struggle. It's all relative.

well out of all my friends growing up, only 1 had a mom who worked. and they did not need the $$. she was basically a part time bookkeeper in her parent’s leather factory.

Ok, I found the information for Nassau/Suffolk Counties for 1980 from the 1980 census.

It's a difficult report to read, but it looks like the median household income was $21,000. For prospective in 2000 it is $43,000.

(no guarantee that the numbers are exact, because I may be reading the report wrong, but it seems to make sense.)
