3 year old keeps leaving her room at night

DD is in a big girl bed after transitioning from her toddler bed. She was never the best sleeper but got into thr habit of sleeping with us during a few vacations this summer,

She did great in a big girl bed so we bought her a bed hoing that would alleviate the need to leave her toddler bed and come into my room at night.

But.... She will ot sleep in her bed at all. I have tolay w her to go to sleep and if she wakes up in the middle of the night she will try to climb into my bed. I put an end to that ut now she wakes me up to get me. To lay with her in her bed.

No one is sleeping, including ynger dc who hears all of this.

How do I get her to stay in her bed in her room. Incentives, punishment, and bribery have not worked.

The super nanny suggests walking kids back in their room over and over again. However, this can get very frustrating in the middle of the night. My dd was a little young (20 months) when she started climbing out of her crib. For her safety, we put a childproof doorknob on the inside of her door (no flames please). That worked for a while. Now at almost 4 she usually sleeps with the door open and is fine. If she keeps getting out of bed, we walk her back and wait in the hallway until she knows we mean business. I've been really frustrated and told her that we would have to lock our own door because she can't keep waking mommy and daddy up ( I know this is mean, but I was desperate!). Usually that's all she has to hear and she's back in her bed. When the AC's aren't on, we sleep with our doors open and she's across the hall. You just have to find what works for you. I've even heard of pediatricians recommending hook and eye locks.

my dd would do the same thing. she would come out of her room about 5 times during the night. we put a lock on her door. it was the only thing we could do. unfortunately if we didnt, not only would she be up all night but so would we. in the end it worked perfectly. she sleeps through just like she used to in the beginning.

My ds is almost 3, we put a gate at his door bc I was afraid he would get up at night and get hurt on the stairs. Now if he wants us he comes to his babygate and yells!

I would put a lock at her door for her own safety.

Good luck!

Re: 3 year old keeps leaving her room at night

We have this problem now too. When she first was in her big girl bed we had a gate on her door. Now she has started sleeping without pull-ups she has to be able to access the bathroom so we took the gate down (there is still one at the top of the stairs though) At least twice a night she comes into our room. The first time I bring her back but usually the 2nd time around 6am I just let her stay. I have no idea at this point how to keep her in bed. We have those door knob things on the guest room and DS's room so she can't get in there. DH wants to put one on our door but I really don't feel comfortable with that.

So after all that my advice is if you DD still sleeps in pull-ups I'd put a gate on the door.

This is our setup too. DD1 is 3.5. She can undo the gate at times but normally doesn't try. She is also old enough to understand rewards. We use a sticker chart with her. She goes to bed without fighting or getting up and she gets a sticker for it. We close the door until she falls asleep, otherwise she is up at the danged gate 500 times (child is nosy LOL) Bedtime has become soo much easier.
