2nd guessing
This ultrascreen next week. I don't know that much about it and I'm under 30 and don't know why the doctor wanted me to get it. Do you need one? What does it really check for?

Re: 2nd guessing
DH and I were both a bit unsure about whether or not I would have the NT scan done. We hesitated bc it is not a diagnostic test but rather gives you the probability of your baby having certain disorders based on your sono, bloodowork and history. And even if your results come back with an "abnormal" probability that still doesnt mean the baby will or wont have that issue. There are other diagnostic tests, such as an amnio, that can confirm or deny these findings.
Anyway, we decided to have it bc we didn't want to miss a chance to see our LO. However, we knew we did not want to have an amnio or any other more invasive test. We discussed with out dr. that we did not want to know the results of the test. He said he would have to tell us if they were abnormal but otherwise he would not discuss it with us. I know it sounds crazy but I didnt want to know any numbers, even if they were considered normal.
We had the scan and it was great to see the baby. All we know is that results were normal and will not have furthur testing.

It's not an invasive test so I didn't see a reason to refuse it. It's an extra chance to see your LO!

Re: 2nd guessing
I didn't have it, and I'm over 30. Dr. felt it would just cause stress for us, since I said I didn't want to do an amnio if results were not good. I do get sonos whenever I ask though and did have one at both 12, 16, 21 and 23 weeks (had to do level 2 twice), so the Dr. also felt they could catch some things through the sonos. I always assumed I would do it, everyone I know IRL did, but basically my Dr. talked me out of it.

Re: 2nd guessing
I opted not to have it. My Dr felt the results could cause undue stress due to the fact my results might not be great solely based on my age. He said he'd still do a sono if I wanted. I also opted for the amniocentesis so I would have a definite answer.

Re: 2nd guessing
NT/Ultrascreen testing is offered to women of all ages. Patients can opt not to do it, but screening must be offered to all. If there is an abnormality, further testing available needs to then be offered. This way the patient can then make an informed decision if they would like to know if there is in fact an abnormality (and to continue with the pregnancy or terminate) or to remain without knowing and continue with the pregnancy or to terminate anyway.
