Warning about plants - Peace Lilies and Cats **UPDATED with news and pictures at the bottom

I just wanted everyone to learn from my unfortunate experience. I went to a local florist and bought 2 peace lily plants. I specifically told the owner that I had cats and wanted to know whether the plants were okay to have around them. His response was that no plants are great for cats - that a cat might vomit from eating part of a plant, but he couldn't sell plants in my neighborhood (which is very pet friendly) if a cat would die just from eating a plant.

Well...that's not true. My cat ate a piece of the plant (apparently, ALL parts of the peace lily are poisonous to cats) and ended up with an acute episode of chronic renal failure. He's still at the vet and likely will be through next week. We are so fortunate that he's responding well to treatment. Cats can, and often do, die from ingesting lilies. We would have been absolutely devasted if we'd lost him and, as it is, we'll probably have to treat him with injections for the foreseeable future once he gets home.

So, I would caution everyone to be EXTREMELY cautious as to what plants you bring into your home and, as I've learned, do your own research rather than relying on supposed "experts."

Thanks. He's so special to us and I feel so awful that I brought something into the house that made him sick. Again, we're so lucky that he's responding really well to the treatment. But I feel terrible about the whole thing.

Re: Warning about plants - Peace Lilies and Cats

i'm soooo sorry this happened to you. when we got our kitty, she would constantly play with our peace lily, which we had for 3 years prior to getting her.

we looked it up online and saw they were toxic and gave it back to my mil who gave it to us. we explained to her why. i am so glad that we got rid of it after reading your post!

i hope your cat gets well and is home soon!!

Wow...that is really scary...we just got two Peace Lillies as gifts and I had no idea that they could be harmful to the cat...guess we have to give them away.

You have a beautiful furbaby. I hope he gets well soon. I'm glad to know that peace lillies are poisonous. I was planning to get one and I plan to get a cat in the future. Maybe I'd better re think my plans.

Re: Warning about plants - Peace Lilies and Cats

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Our cat is doing MUCH better and we get to take him home tomorrow!!! Chat Icon We still have to give him injections, meds and special food, but we're just so happy he'll be coming home.

Here are a few pictures from his visit with "Daddy" last night Chat Icon

The wrapping on his leg is for the catheter they use to give him his meds.
