2-3 year old sleeping schedule

My son is 32 months old and gave up his nap right before he turned 2! He naps occasionally if we are out in the car and he is tired.. Right now he is in a horrible sleep pattern because he is teething really bad. He sleeps anywhere from 9-12 hours a night. He was sleeping 9pm-9am up until a couple of weeks ago. He gets very cranky around 6-7pm. I tried to put him down early but he woke up between 5-6am. Now he isn't going to bed until 10-1030 most nights. Tonight was 1115pm because we were out.. He passes right out though. I let him sleep in most mornings, except Monday and Friday, those are his therapy days.. He is SO active during the day I figured he would be ready for bed by 8-9pm.. Is being awake for 12 hours too much for him? How many hours does your DC stay up during the day if they don't nap?

DD is 24 months & DS is 39 months and they both pretty much have the same sleep pattern. They go to bed around 9pm, wake up around 7:30am but they still nap close to 3 hours per day (around 12:30 - 3:30).

Re: 2-3 year old sleeping schedule

That is what his schedule was before he gave up his naps. He slept 8-10 hours a night with a 2-3 hour nap. Now he is up 12+ hours some days with no nap.. I miss those naps. He is quite miserable in the early evening now.. I am hoping once all of his molars come through, this will be easier...

I absolutely dread the day they give up napping! Hopefully it's due to the molars.

Re: 2-3 year old sleeping schedule

DS sleeps anywhere from 7-9 hours at night with no nap during the day. He usually goes down around 8:30/9 and gets up around 5 or 6. Yesterday we were at the fireworks and he went to bed at 11:30 and still got up at 6. He is very active during the day, doesn't really get cranky unless he is in a bad mood or really tired and doesn't take a nap. He has been doing this for a while. When he did take a nap he would get up at 4. And when he gets up - he is raring to go!

Re: 2-3 year old sleeping schedule

My 34 month old & 23.5 month old have similar sleep patterns but they still nap. My older guy does go days where he doesn't nap & those are horrendous days. For the most part, my guys are awake 7 hrs before they nap. They get up around 530-6 daily & go to bed between 745-830. They do nap 2-3 hrs daily. Both are extremely active boys & usually outside the majority of the day.

2-3 year old sleeping schedule

DS is 2, goes to sleep between 7 and 8, wakes up around 7, plus naps from 1 to 3-3:30. He still needs to nap. The most he stays up is 6 hours. He is very active and often we have swim lessons, go to the park, beach run around.

Re: 2-3 year old sleeping schedule

DS will be 3 yrs on this month and still naps (Thank God!) Goes to bed at night anywhere from 7:30-8 (later in the summer sometimes) wakes up 8-9am goes for a nap 2-4pm
he can make it through the day w/o a nap but it can be tough. i am pretty schedule and routine oriented although not a slave to it like i was with my now 5yr old DD.
i find that if he is really active, like if we go to the park, beach, pool the nap is a MUST in the afternoon!

ETA i think 6 hrs is as long as my DS can make i w/o getting overly tired. could your DS just now be in a bad pattern b.c he is overtired?

He goes through the bad pattern when he is cutting teeth. Which take forever with him.. He was ok when he was sleeping 9-9. Now because he is going is sleep later, he is waking later. I guess I will have to wait and see if it is his teeth that are causing his evening crankiness or if he is just tired!

Re: 2-3 year old sleeping schedule

I think that if your DS isn't napping, then a 10PM bedtime is way too late.

DS is 32 months and on the days he doesn't nap, he's asleep no later than 7-7:30PM and that's pushing it. He'd be asleep earlier if it wasn't for dinner. He'll sleep 12-13 hours on these days.

His normal schedule is up around 7:30-8AM. Naps have definitely gotten shorter. He naps anywhere from 1-1.5 hours (used to be 2.5hrs). He had a phase recently that made naptime a challenge (crying, not falling asleep, sleeping for only 30 minutes)but after a couple of days thing have gotten better and he's sleeping 1.5 hrs again and falls asleep easily.

Bedtime unfortunately is not until about 9:15/9:30PM which I am NOT a fan of but he just doesn't seem tired before then. He sleeps about 10-10.5 hours at night.

ETA: DS is very very active. He rarely sits down, lol! Why he doesn't fall asleep earlier baffles my DH. Yesterday DH and DS did a lot in the evening and DH thought for sure DS would knock out so we put him down earlier, but no, he stayed awake in bed for almost an hour.Chat Icon

I try to put him down by 9, but he isn't ready... He is too wound up still from the days activities.. I figured he would drop too, but he is raring to go.. I bathe him at 7 and then we relax. I have cut back on the tv. It goes off at 8. He plays and we read. I hope it is jut a phase... He slept from 1120pm (out late last night) until 1030am- He asked for a nap at 330pm but he didn't sleep. I don't understand where he gets the energy from.. He isn't physically ready for bed before 10pm if he is sleeping until 10-1030am. And he doesn't fare well if I wake him up early..

Re: 2-3 year old sleeping schedule

Em is 30 months.

Up at anywhere between 7:30 and 8:30a
Nap from Noon until 2:30p
Get ready for bed at 7:30- bath, books, playing in her room
Actually asleep by 8:30p

If she is playing really hard or is really tired she will go to bed right at 8p and sleep until 9a. This is more typical if she napped shorter then 2 hrs. She is starting to not want an afternoon nap, but I still have her go in for down time. I say 99% of the time she sleeps.

My suggestion, and I would cringe if someone suggested it to me, is to get him up at 8:30 or 9am on days when he sleeps in. It sounds like he wants/needs the 12 hrs of sleep, but if he's sleeping in until 10:30a his bedtime is off. Even try getting him up at 10am for a few days then 9:45 then 9:30 and so on until you get to a more reasonable time for your life. Like I said at Noon we go to "sleepy nap" as she calls it. 99% of the time she sleeps, but every now and then she just reads or plays in there. Tell him that at Noon he doesn't have to sleep but it is quiet time and he has to be quiet in his room for an hour. Make sure he has a few books, or something to play with but keep all electronic or loud toys out. This should be a resting period. You may find that after an hour he is asleep.

2-3 year old sleeping schedule

As much as it sucks, I wouldn't let him sleep until 10-10:30 in the morning. I think that is only adding to your issues.

DS is 2 and sleeps pretty much 11-12 hours at night plus a 2.5-3 hour nap.

ETA: You mentioned in a prior thread that at 9 he still seemed wound up from the days activities. I think at that point he may be over-tired. If he's cranky by 6-7, I would really put some thought into a 7-7:30 bedtime, if that's possible. DS goes to bed at that time, and that's with a good 2.5-3 hour nap each day.
