1st Birthday Party - WWYD

So, originally DH and I were not planning to have a 1st birthday party for DS.

We were going to just have cake at home and if we saw family (both my mom and IL's live close and we see them often) have a small cake with them.

But lately, EVERYONE is asking if we are having a 1st birthday party for DS and I'm feeling pressured to do so. And I guess, there's a small part of me that really wants to celebrate DS' 1st birthday.

The problem is that we both have big families. If we do a party with just immediate family (parents and siblings & nieces/nephews), it will already be 25 people (15 adults, 10 kids).

BUT, my dad passed away 2 years ago and his family (1st cousins) were really close to us, (we lived with them for 5 years) and I consider them as close as my immediate siblings. My father wanted us to stay close and always invited them to EVERYTHING. In my mind, I def need to invite 1st cousins and kids, but if we invite my side of the family, we have to invite DH's, which now brings us to 50 (28 adults, 22 kids).

The numbers are just getting out of hand, and truthfully, DH will go ballistic if we go from no party to 50 people.

we've already discussed this. We're doing a small family party for DS's 1st birthday. We're having the Christening this year and my sister's wedding (shower and such). Its too much after a while so just immediate family.

Ugh. I am always in the same boat, and we always end up inviting everyone.

Would those first cousins be offended?

Like you, we have a big extended family. So for her first birthday (which is next Thursday) we just decided to have a small get together and do cake with immediate family only - 15 people.

We had a huge party at our house for her baptism - 90 people. That was with just inviting all Aunts, Uncles, cousins and a few friends. People keep asking me the same thing and making a big deal that we are not going all out for her 1st. When they make those comments I just bring up the baptism and how that was Sophia's 'big' day-at least for a few more years. Chat Icon

I think the first cousins would be a little hurt, but truthfully, in ,my heart, I know my father would have been so disappointed. When we were little, we were very poor and they "rented" their upstairs apartment to us, which really amounted to them giving us a place to live which we would otherwise never be able to afford. My father's side of the family has always been super close to us but opens up the can of worms of other first cousins.

See, we did a small baptism for the same reason. The numbers just got too big, so that can't be our excuse.

If that is the case then either I'd invite them or just do you and DH and DSChat Icon

We had 30+ at our house for DS' first birthday and it was fun and this year I said "smaller party!" and it comes out smaller--28Chat Icon Chat Icon

We sort of had the same issue and we decided to just do immediate family which will be about 20 people. We had a huge party for DD's Baptism, so we decided to have a small house party for her 1st.

We weren't going to have a 1st birthdya party either but then decided to do something very small - 15 people and immediate family ONLY. No cousins, nothing. Just Chris' mom and grandma and his brother and sister and my closest friends. Small, at home, not expensive and a lot of fun for Athan Chat Icon

First, when is your DC's birthday? If you do choose to have a big party there are so many options to go with. You could always do it at a park and only have heros or something. We had about 65 pp at our DD's and found a really reasonable place. It really wasn't that much.

The two of you will have to figure it out. Sorry. Chat Icon
