When you were in L&D ...

Did you hear other women giving birth? I was sent over to Stony Brook last night for PIH monitoring, and the woman in the bed across from me was scaring me to death. The whole unit was packed and this poor girl (the nurse indicated that she was a teen mother) was laboring in a recovery room "curtained" area. She was terrified and screaming her head off.
My first son I delivered in Huntington and we felt like we were at a hotel - I know there were other deliveries, but i didnt see or hear anything.
I'm starting to get nervous about delivering at such a busy hospital. Chat Icon

Can you tell me your experience?

Re: When you were in L&D ...

I delivered at St. Charles and thank goodness didn't hear anything else. We went in as a scheduled induction, but I believe they were pretty busy. I'm guessing if someone was pretty loud I would have heard her though.

What a great experience for you Chat Icon

And they wondered why my pressure was going up! Then on top of that -- a resident comes in and says "you're here for a c-section, right?" I'm like GOD, NO!

I delivered at Huntington also. We heard the woman across the way loud & clear, screaming her head off.

DH said "You need to push or she's going to go first." I said "THIS IS NOT A RACE!"

I did hear other babies crying at huntington as they were delivered. I remember telling the nurse -- "thats not fair that she had her baby! I KNOW I was here first!"

Re: When you were in L&D ...

I also delivered at Huntington-- When I was in labor with my first, I heard the doctors and nurses counting in Spanish for her- I was cheering her on from my room (yeah, I am a dork)-- When I heard her baby's first cry- I started crying! ( I am a little emotional too!) I was actually kind of happy to hear it all. When I gave birth to my second, I don't remember hearing anyone else. : )

MY first was a c/s. Heard only what was going on in my room.

My second was a labor and VBAC and I was in the room outside of the nurses station. Not only could I hear all the nurses, but yes, I could hear other women screaming. It really had no effect on me, it actually made me feel better about my labor because it was going well and I was pretty silent Chat Icon

I delivered at winthrop 3 pregnanicies. I didn't hear anything except for the last delivery, as a woman they were wheeling down the hallway was screaming.

Re: When you were in L&D ...

I was admitted at night for an induction, so I was in L&D for a while before they put me in a room. There were a couple of woman in and out before me and one was obviously in so much pain. She was moaning and groaning and scared the heck out of me.

Re: When you were in L&D ...

I delivered at Huntington and heard some nurses counting for someone either across the hall or next door to my room...

I heard a cry, I heard "Its a Boy" and of course I started crying too.
I was also jealous because I was already in labor about 20 hours and still nothing.
(I finally had a c section).

I have to say, Huntington was quiet and kind of private.Chat Icon

Then be thankful I wasn't your nurse, I always get so excited when I start pushing with a patient and there is someone else on the unit pushing. I always tell my patient come on you have to deliver before them, you can't let them win! Chat Icon

Re: When you were in L&D ...

I delivered in Huntington and I definitely heard other girls in labor that scared the poop out of me!!
While the dr was starting the induction, another girl was in labor and was absolutely screaming in pain....he jokingly asked the nurse if she was going natural....the nurse said "no, she had an epidural...it wasn't very encouraging. I think 3 girls delivered that night

I delivered my son at the children's hospital on Stanford Univ. campus in California. There were 3 other women in labor that night, but I heard none of them.

I delivered my daughter at Stony Brook and I also heard no one else! But, then again, I was only in the delivery room for 15 minutes!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
