15 months and up or BTDT - Does DC still use paci?

Thomas is 16 months. He is extremely dependent on paci to sleep - naps and night. He has four of them in his crib. When I check on him or when I wake him in the morning he almost ALWAYS has it in his mouth so I know he puts it back in throughout the night. I also use it in the car. He can't seem to sit there and relax without it. He graduates to the Toddler Room at daycare in October and they don't allow pacis. I don't know how'll he'll sleep! Chat Icon

I spoke to ped about it, and she said it's OK to keep giving it to him at night. She said when I start finding that is isn't in his mouth in the morning, we can start to wean by giving it to him to fall asleep, but then removing it from his crib. I just feel like when he wakes in the middle of the night for it, he'll scream his head off when he can't find one, which is what he did before he was able to put it back in his mouth himself.

Anyone else's DC still use paci at age 15 months and up and what are your thoughts about it? When do you plan to wean and how?

Also BTDT advice very much appreciated!

DS was using it to sleep and nap and would wake up in the middle of the night screaming if he couldn't find it. Just before his 1st birthday, we took it away cold turkey. It was one night of screaming, but he was fine after that. Good Luck!

DS is 14 months and still using a paci alot too. He uses it at night also and wakes up once in while if it falls out of the crib and he cant get to it, to put it back in his mouth. I am not really sure how to wean him off it. I have heard try taking it away during the day first, so i have been trying to do that (although it hasn't been very successful yet). When its not around and hes playing with his toys, he seems to be fine, but if he sees it, forget it, then he has to have it

I am having a hard time getting DS to forget about his paci too! He takes it during naps and at night but i want to get rid of it altogether and i can't afford to lose sleep (i go back to work next week and he starts daycare for the first time).

My ped recommended cutting a slit in it so it loses its suction but that didn't work....it just made my ds cry for it more.

23-months-old and DD can't seem to live without it. Just like your DC....needs it for naps & night sleep. She also needs it to comfort herself if she gets really upset. Loves to have it for a car ride...etc. Pretty much whenever she can have it, she wants it!

ETA: I am planning to wean b4 the year is out. I am expecting another child in April so I want her to be broken of it well before her brother or sister has one. I don't want her to find it at all tempting or a tease.

My DS slept with his paci till he was a little past 2. He was never given it during the daytime so that wasn't an issue. I weaned him cold turkey. He was a total insomniac for 5 nights, it was brutal. And my DS is very go-with-the-flow and adaptable when it comes to changes (slept in toddler bed the very first night like nothing had changed, etc)

I'm expecting #2 now and let me tell you, that paci will be gone a LOT earlier.

DD just turned 16 months and still uses her soothie for naps and bedtime. Shes comfortable with it so why not. Eventually I will break her out of it but not now. Its not like she has it in her mouth all day long.

DS is 22mths and we slowly weened him to pacis only at bedtime/nap or if we were out and he was extremely tired/cranky. This past Fri-Mon we took them way for good cold turkey. Last night he had a meltdown and I gave it to him at bedtime. Lets see how tonight goesChat Icon

My daughter will be 3 in october and still uses it but ONLY to sleep - ironically, she naps everyday at daycare for 2 hours without it - I really don't see the harm

Nope. He bit the tip off at 8 or 9 mos and I figured that was his way of telling me he was over it.

Totally scary moment though!

DD will be 14 months soon & still uses it for naps/nighttime & in the car & if she happens to find one during the day. I hope to wean her by 18 months. I may just try cold turkey

My DS still uses the paci but only to sleep, he actually nows it has to say in the crib and can't come out. I will probably allow it until he decides he doesn't want it or until he start not taking a regular nap. No rush. (Also use for the really long car rides to VA)

Edited to add -15 mos.
