15 month old REFUSES to eat

Need advice/encouragement. My DS went through a period of 7 weeks of diarrhea which for some reason just seemed to clear up on its own (took long enough). So finally I thought now we can get some weight on this kid but for the past 1-2 weeks he is eating NOTHING. This is what he will eat on a typical day:

approx 12 oz of soy milk (he was drinking 20oz)
1 container of almond milk yogurt
white rice (1/3 cup)
ketchup-plain with no food (he sucks the ketchup off of the food and throws the leftover food)
That is it, period
He is refusing EVERYTHING else I give him includign: fruit pouches, hotdogs cookies, bars, anything we make for dinner, chicken nuggets, fish sticks, oatmeal, toast, eggs etc etc etc. He is dairy intolerant so we can't do dairy products.
I don't know if it is his teeth bothering him or just that he is going through a very difficult tantrumy phase right now and feels like slapping away everything I offer...
HELP! Is this normal?
The pedi is no use they just say-offer him food he will eat when he is hungry but he doesn't eat and I am sick of making white rice. He has lost about 1 pound since his 12 month birthday.

15 month old REFUSES to eat

It's so hard to watch your kid not eat, I can't dealing with it for months on end. DD goes through phases with most things and meat/protein is definitely the toughest. I've heard that same advice so many times so I guess it must have some truth to it.

DD loves rice and harasses me before dinner to make it clear that's all she wants. I serve her meat first before DH and I sit down and before I even let her see that there is anything else. She'll go days where she barely touches it and then eventually she comes back around. I try cutting things small, giving her whole pieces to bite, putting it on a fork for her to do, trying to feed her myself, etc. Every day it's something different that might or might not work. Sometimes I can get away with adding some tiny pieces of chicken or steak into the rice but she often catches on. Some of DD's other favorites are sweet potatoes (cooked till they're super mushy), pasta (barilla plus for extra protein) with a little salt and olive oil, fruit cups, bananas, BH ham, yogurt, pbj or just peanut butter on crackers. Earth's Best is also making veggie and protein pouches so I'll give her those on nights I'm worried about how little she ate. I've also read on here about mixing coconut oil into the yogurt for some extra calories.

Funny the one thing he loves is to eat coconut oil when I try to put it on his excema. I have dealt with basically the same things you have though at this point I would consider that a "good" appetite compared to what he is doing now. We even did the same of trying to offer protein before he could even see the rice/pasta etc. Now he is just eating absolutely nothing. It has to be one of the most frustrating things to have your child refuse to eat when you know he is hungryChat Icon He will actually pick up food, bring it to his mouth and then either spit it out immediately or start crying and not even put it in. I hope whatever is causing this passes soon because he feels so skinny to me now Chat Icon

DId you try babyfood, like pouches or jars even? DD was VERY picky at that age (and had teething issues as well) and I would use babyfood as a last resort. She usually would take a stage 3 jar and a pouch. I felt it was better for her to eat something. I know how horrible it feels when they don't eat.

Re: 15 month old REFUSES to eat

When DD was teething she didn't eat much either, it's so frustrating!
The only thing that worked once in a while was blending some fruit & drinking it in front of her & she would ask to have it.
When I tried to mix veggies in it she wouldn't drink as much so if you do try it (if you haven't yet) maybe you should hold off on the veggies the first time so he likes it & will drink it again the next time.
Good luck! He will eat eventuallyChat Icon

Re: 15 month old REFUSES to eat

Thanks for the support..I really feel like he is going to starve himself. Today so far he has eaten a tbsp of yogurt and 1/2 of a 5 ounce bottle...that's it. I wouldn't worry if he was a porker but at 21.5 pounds (now down to 20.5 pounds) he actually feels bonyChat Icon
