$140 fee for ped after hours
Our ped office billed us a $140 fee for after hours. This is on top of the actual cost of the doctor visit (actually a nurse practitioner). I am annoyed because the office did not inform me that there would be a fee associated with an eve hour appointment.
We had a $300 deductible and our insurance said we are responsible for this fee.
Is this normal to get charged extra to have an evening appointment?

If theyre normal weekly office hours that is insane.. My ped does not do this -- and hes there til 10 pm twice a week

We actually got charged twice - one for each kid. One appointment was at 5:40 and another for 7:00pm. The 7:00pm was a well visit. The entire time I was thinking what great hours our ped office had. They also take open sick visits from 6-8am daily. Wonder if there is an extra fee associated with walk in sick visits.
DH thinks we should just pay the fee. I am really annoyed by it.
We had one ped who used to charge $40 for after hour calls. I called once and the answering service said we can speak to a doctor on call for a fee. I declined and just waited until the morning.

I used to work in a peds office and I've never, ever heard of such a thing. How can you charge that DURING hours? And charge to speak on the phone? It's a pediatrician for crying out loud, not a psychic hotline.
I'd send a check with a nasty note and find a new doc.

No way should you have to pay that.

This is not normal. I have never even heard of this. It was a scheduled appt. My kids appointments are always after work. That's why I chose my ped! I wouldn't pay it and would definitely be calling the office. They should have notified you there would be an additional charge and allowed you to decide if you still wanted that time. I bet if you refute it, they will waive it.

Yes, the 7pm was a well visit. I could easily have made that appointment at another time. I needed a school form filled out for the annual well visit.
The 5:40pm infuriates me because my kid had a heat rash. She offered me 3:30 but the slot got taken while I was on the phone with her. She said she had 5:40 and I took it. No mention of it being after hours.

This. We get charged on Sundays for sick visits a bit more but there is notification all over the place so it's not a shock-that sounds insane to me and so unfair

this! i would be so mad. Thats insane! Never once did the tell you this id refuse to pay this especially for a well visit!

I would not pay this and fight to with the office. That fee is very high and it is wrong. They scheduled a well visit for that time they should give a disclaimer about the fee.

The appointments were during their regularly scheduled hours? Then absolutely not! That is crazy! Especially if they did not make you aware of the extra fee prior to the appointment. If you had a sick child and they saw you outside of their regular hours then I could see them charging a fee.

I would fight it with the Dr's office. I got charged a convenience fee once for a urgent care. It wasn't disclosed to me at the time of service so I wrote a letter stating I wasnt' going to pay it and that was that.
You shouldn't be charged a convenience fee for a regularly scheduled well visit - insane.

I would ask to speak with the business manager and explain that I am not paying the fee. They never told you about it. I would find a new pediatrician if they did not get rid of the fee.

This just seems VERY scam-ish to me

Fight this fee. You were never informed appropriately of these after hours fees so if not posted in the office or mentioned over the phone, they really should waive it. My pediatrician works all the time & never heard anything like this.
