14 month old climbing on the couch

So Declan has figured out how to climb pon the couch. Obviously he doesn't realize he can fall backward. What did you do once yoru kids started climbing? Do you just have to constantly be in the same room?

This was the time when my floors were covered in pillows and blankets. Sorry..that's all I got. For a point in time my floors were non-existent in pictures.

I actually thought of that but then I'm scared he will slip on those and fall on his faceChat Icon

Re: 14 month old climbing on the couch

I would monitor him when he was in the same room.as.anything he could climb.... I wouldn't stop him from climbing nor would I put him on the couch. I would help him figure out how to climb. I felt if he knew how to do it well, including falling - hence the need to be monitored - he would then do it safely.

Paxton will step on whatever is around to boost himself up onto the couch. The kids usually throw all the pillows on the rug (which is how he gets up there in the first place) and he has fallen off the couch a few times. I keep the area clear of anything else and just keep an eye on him for the most part. You can also try to show him the right way to get down to minimize hurting himself.

He actually figured it out all himself. He throws one leg up and then bunches up the couch fabric as a handhold and swings his leg up. With the two of them I have babyproofed my living room and now this arose...not sure. I will teach him how to get down though. Its now also only a matter of days before Ronan does itChat Icon

Recently my DD has started climbing on my recliner and I showed her the correct way to get down. She has also started standing on it too. The other day I found her sitting in the middle of the kids table I have. It is a pain when they start doing this because you have to really keep an eye on them until they get a little more stable and also get some more sense.

Luckily Hudson doesn't climb a ton but he knows how to get on his belly to get down. I would work on teaching him how to get down.

Brody is 16 months. It got sooo bad today that I took the baby cage contraption, undid it and snaked it around both couches. The ottoman had to take up residence in our bedroom, laying sideways about 2 months ago.

This boy is into EVERYTHING!

this is what we did and only ONCE did my DS fall off the couch and it wasnt because of climbing on the couch it was because he was learning how to jump off the couch. once we taught him he couldnt jump he didnt do it again.. now that we have lower couches and hes much older 2.5 he jumps and lands on his feet all the time.

Re: 14 month old climbing on the couch

Good question as always...DD just started climbing into her FP Nb to Toddler rocker, but she learned quickly to come out by going head first with her hands down on the ground. I had to show her a few times but she got it quick. Maybe try showing him how to get down somehow? Little Monkeys.Chat Icon

This is what we did...I would wait for her to climb the couch/bed and then nice and slowly talk to her and show her how to get down!! she is doing it now on her own!!!

I agree with this. I realized my DD and I needed to have this talk when I corralled her into the living room, came out of the bathroom and found her sitting in our huge recliner Chat Icon No idea how she got up there!

So I taught her how to swing her one leg down, and then the other...now she's really good at it and I don't worry very much about her climbing on everything in sight! She's pretty cautious by nature, though, so I guess it depends on how daring your DS tends to be!

Re: 14 month old climbing on the couch

The couch did not concern me...the dining room table did. We were chairless for 2 months...kept them all in the bathroom.
