I went to one, but only after they 'found' an issue with the AFP test during the pregnancy.
If your family has a past history of something, your doctor might recommend it.

Our RE gave us some information about this.
He recommended that I be tested for Cystic Fibrosis (optional, and if I am not a carrier, then DH doesn't need testing) - even though we didn't have anyone in either of our families who have this.
There were other questions based on our ethnic backgrouns, but we did not fall into any "at-risk" categories I guess.
Not sure if this helps at all!
Do you have reason to believe you might be a carrier of something? Or are you just wanting to be cautious?

no - i think most RE's throw it out there to you - if you want to do it...
we weren't carriers of anything either, but it could be something you were interested in doing.
I think most people don't do it unless they have to - because some insurance companies' don't cover it.
