Yeah, maybe send them a list of everything John doesn't want (as per them) and include everything you can possibly think of then on the bottom a short list of what he does want... "CASH"

I would just let the hall deal with the food and the maybe send them an email saying that you are really not sure about a gift so cash would be the best bet.

I would ask them to give you some examples of what they can eat, and forward the message to your cousin prior to the party so that you dont have to deal with it on the day of.
