What can I do for a cold?
Ellie has one for several days and I've been doing saline, but is there anything else I can do for her? She's not sleeping so well, but she's only 5 mos, so she can't have any meds can she?

Re: What can I do for a cold?
I gave tylenol because he has an ear infection and head cold and I thought it might help ease the pain. But besides the saline drops and vaporizer and maybe elevating his mattress it just has to run its course right?

You should call your doctor and ask.....Jackson has a head cold right now - head congestion, sneezing, cough. So I bought children's Tylenol for cough and sneezing. I called my doctor and they said to give him 1/2 tsp every 4 hours. He's 6 months. I've been using the nasal aspirator and humidifier. That's pretty much all you can do

Re: What can I do for a cold?
Our pediatrician told us to never use a decongestent with a baby, I don't remember why, but there are safety reasons. For a cold, basically you have to let it run its course - use tylenol to ease any fever or aches and pains (actually, Motrin lasts longer and I've found it to be more effective), elevate the crib mattress a little so the stuffiness will drain better, and use a vaporizer or humidifier If it gets REALLY bad, steam up the bathroom and sit in there for a few minutes with baby - it helps clear out the stuffiness...

Ellie has one for several days and I've been doing saline, but is there anything else I can do for her? She's not sleeping so well, but she's only 5 mos, so she can't have any meds can she? I think most cold meds for infants say "check with doctor" so I would ask him/her if your DC can have something. However, just like any cold, usually it just has to work itself out. My guy is still in a bassinet and the mattress can't be raised so I put him in his infant carrier to sleep for 2 nights where at least his head was elevated. And I did the saline drops. I only gave Tylenol when he had a fever and one other time when he had a slight fever (99.7) but seemed really cranky and not happy at all, I figured maybe the congestion was bothering him and since it was late and he couldn't sleep a bit would help him. He's ok now! (except for an ingrown pinky nail - ouch!)

Re: What can I do for a cold?
Def ask the dr.
Since DD is on her 3rd consective cold we have been pros at this.
We elevate her mattress-we have the inclined to sleep since she has reflux, i put baby vapo rub on her at night, a humidifier in her room, baby vapor bath with her baths(she doesn't get baths everyday-has eczema), and we do give her benadryl every 4-6 hours when the congestion is really bad and i hear her breathing through her mouth. I only give her tylenol if i know for sure she is achy or has an earache which is rare for her.
So far DD's cold have lasted at least 3 weeks, only to catch another one right after.
ETA: My DD HATES the boogie sucker and saline drops, so we dont use them on her.
