Info about Seaford
Can anyone recommend, or not recommend, Seaford? Are there neighborhoods to avoid?
We had not thought of it at all, but a friend of mine mentioned it recently. Neither one of us know that area of LI so any info is helpful.

Re: Info about Seaford
Seaford is a mile and a half wide and maybe 2 miled long. Its a small town
I dont think you can go wrong with any parts, its not that big.
i live north of sunrise which is considered teh manor.
There are 2 elementary schools, one junior and one high school Its a tiny district which I like.
South of Merrick Rd is considered the harbor there are parts north of jerusalem ave that is seaford with Levittown schools.
WHere are you looking??

Re: Info about Seaford
Most areas of the Manor elem school are better than the Harbor elem school... it can be mixed down there. I teach in the district and most of the rougher kids are from the Harbor. At the same time there are some beautiful houses down there as well.
Right now teachers are working in their first year w/o a teaching contract and the Board is not negotiating in good faith at all. There have been many programs that have been cut in the 11 years I have been teaching there. It is a small district and some feel this is a plus, some a minus.
Because of the lack of commercial real estate, taxes tend to be a bit higher for the same house you might find in a neighboring district.
It is close to many of the major parkways and of course the LIRR and plenty of shopping.

Re: Info about Seaford
Thanks for the information!
We haven't begun to look there at all, and it may be a bit too far out for us ultimately. But we wanted to consider some other areas, and my friend mentioned Seaford. After a quick search on MLS, it looked as if there was quite a bit in our price range.
Thanks for pointing out that it is a small town, and the school district is small. You are right--there are advantages and disadvantages to that.
Does anyone know if flooding is an issue? DH is leery of being so close to the water.

It's very hard to get a budget to pass even in good economic times. Even in the boom 90's our budgets would pass by a handful, I'm talking sometimes 14 votes.
WHY??? There are a lot of families in Seaford who have lived there for generations and seem to never move and they often vote down the budgets. Ironically, it's some of these same families who have some of the most troubled kids or kids who require tens of thousands of dollars in special placments/ resources etc. You would think they'd be happy that they are getting so much more than what they pay in taxes.
To further the irony, last year the teacher's union found out that many of our "no" votes, and anti-teacher literature that is spread around town come budget time, is from a particular "out of work on disability" civil service NYC employee. He collects a fat disability check, doesn't work and spends his time slandering other public civil employees Oh, and he has no children in the district and knows nothing more about education than having once attended school himself. Unfortunately, he usually places a flyer on EVERYONE's front lawn in the dark of night come budget time and his propoganda sways a lot of people to vote no.
Third, there are several members of the staff (non-teachers) who feel that it's ok to collect a paycheck from the district and send their kids there but they brag about voting down the budget I can't even look at these people when I see them in the hallway. Thankfully, this year, I do not teach any of their kids so I try to avoid them.
Sorry so long, just thought you should know. All of these problems have been on-going since I started over 10 years ago.

Re: Info about Seaford
I live in Seaford, north of Sunrise as well. I absolutely love it here. I happen to have a big piece of property (187 x 60) that I know we would not be able to find pretty much anywhere else in Nassau. I love the fact that we are so centrally located to everything. We can hit any of the major highways in 10 mins or less- and there is so much around there.

Re: Info about Seaford
I think seaford is a great area, we ended up buying in Massapequa with plainedge schools, and believe it or not, some parts of Seaford attend Plainedge schools as well.

Re: Info about Seaford
We live in Seaford - North of Sunrise - and love it - we are Levittown School District. If/When we decide to buy another house we will be looking to either stay in Seaford, Wantagh, or Mass (Mass Park)
