Regrets on Breastfeeding....

Ok, so here goes. I have a stupid question......

My boys are 2 months old, and have regrets on BFing. I had a rough labor and wanted to but i didnt.
The thing is my milk is all dried up and was feeding Christopher and tried to see if he would latch on and he did but cried because nothing came out.
My question is....can i still get my milk back?? or is it too late??Chat Icon

Re: Regrets on Breastfeeding....

I got sick, severely dehydrated, put on powerful antibiotics and was hospitilized for a week when Lauren was 3 weeks old. Since I was so dehydrated, I lost my milk. and since I was on the antibiotics, I could not BF. I tried pumping and had a hard time building my supply.

I am sure its possible if you rent a hospital grade pump and pump several times. It is very time consuming and therefore I didn't go through with it and put Lauren on formula. I still look back and have regrets I didn't try harder, but at the same time, know that being on the antibiotics, I just made the best decision I could.

Try. That's all I can say. At least if you can't, you might not feel as much regret knowing that you at least tried.

Re: Regrets on Breastfeeding....

you can get it back but you have to be really good at pumping every 2 to 3 hours, and drinking lots and lots of water. putting them to your breast will help but to make sure they are getting enough while you are waiting for your milk to come back you should put them to breast for a few minutes (both at the same time if you can)then ffeed the bottle then pump. good luck!

You probably could. If you really want to BF I would meet with a lactation consultant. I know they could help you.

Re: Regrets on Breastfeeding....

You can get your supply back. Your doctor can prescribe you 10 milligrams of metoclopramide (Reglan), 3-4 times a day, for 4 to 14 days. It can help you produce milk again. Then start pumping every 2-3 hours.

It goes fast. Pay attention.

I would say it's not too late. Adoptive moms sometimes make arrangements to breastfeed with the help of their doctors.

You might be able to get your supply back, I wonder if the boys would be able to latch on. Did they latch on at birth?? I finished BF'ing in August and I still produce enough milk to feed a small army (well a teensy tiny small baby type army of one)

Good Luck!!!

I know this is stupid but last night when i finished feeding Christopher the bottle, I tried to see if he would latch on my breast and he did, and sucked very well, but stopped because nothing was coming out and he stopped.

My DH thinks Im crazy now because I go back to work in a month, so maybe I should just foregt itChat Icon

That doesn't sound stupid! I tried that every day for 5 months to see if Noah would latch on...I think its worth a try! Lots of my friends have gone back to work and they are doing Morning and Evening Feeds and formula feeding in the daytime. There is nothing at all wrong with mixed feeding!

I would try pumping. My milk took a long time to dry up.

Re: Regrets on Breastfeeding....

Even if it's just for a month - you may be happy with that decision. Could you pump at school?

Re: Regrets on Breastfeeding....

Its a lot of work to get your milk back and then get your babies to breastfeed. If you'll do it for more than a month then go for it. If you'll only do it for a month, most of your time will be spent trying to get your milk back, which would only leave you a week or two to BF.
