I'd keep most the money. I'd probably buy a 700 or 800k house, put 200k down, carry a 500k mortgage (less than we carry now and more house than we have now) and invest the other 200k - I can do more with it than the bank! A mortgage is a "good" type of debt, pay it off eventually but not at this point in our lives when we are getting increases in our salary at a high rate. I wouldn't want to grow out of the house....

If I moved to an affordable area, I would buy two 200K houses, and rent one out. If I had to stay here, I would try and get as close to the 400K as I could.

I would find a piece of land and build the house I want, (which isn't extravagant). I would use some of the 400K for down payment and closing ect. and keep the rest in the bank, taking out a mortgage for the rest for tax benefits.

I would just spend that if I could, but that won'' buy a house in my area, so I would tkae a mortgage out & spend more, so I could stay here.
I wouldn't spend more just because I could.

Well since I want to stay in NY and 400 wont get me very far for my dream house to be built here- I would def have to get a mortgage- but the 400 does help!!!

I would try & find something for 400k or i would spend a little more...

I'd move to FL, buy a house and save the rest
same here.... i'd move somewhere cheaper (most likely FL or NC) and then invest the rest in something that would generate more income

Thats a good idea...
If I stayed here.. I would look for "the one" and if it fell in that price range then great..and if it didnt then I would take out a small mortgage
