Re: Teachers
I dont teach 5th, but I would do some kind of student interviews...so they can make a new friend and learn about each other... also, check out www.proteacher.net for ideas...good luck!

Re: Teachers
Good luck and congrats! I don't teach fifth either but getting to know you type games are always fun. Can't think of any off the top of my head that would be appropriate for fifth grade. Sorry, I guess I wasn't much help. I am sure if you ask the same question in about two weeks, I 'd have more ideas. I am still in summer mode.

Re: Teachers
Congrats!!! That's so exciting!
Set the rules of your classroom early!
I read somewhere a getting to know you activity. The teacher pulled out a roll of toilet paper and passed it around the room. She asked the students to take as many squares as they wanted. Some took one and other smart@ss students took a ton of squares. When the paper was all distributed, the teacher told the students to count all the squares up. The amount of squares you had were the number of things you had to share with the class. So if I have 5 squares, I have to tell the class 5 things about myself. You could also develop that into a writing activity.
I've also done letters that students write to themselves about what they hope to achieve and accomplish this year. You collect all the letters and save them for the end of the year.
Hope I helped! Good luck to you!!

Re: Teachers
congrats! YOu must be excited! I teach kindergarten, so I don't know what to do with 5th. I will ask some of my friends to see what they do. Web searches are great for lessons and information. I have always been told and have told others that you want the kids to go home happy on the first day of school. It's their time to get to know their new classmates and you. Set the rules right away and don't make them work too hard. The parents will be happy with you if their kid comes home happy. THat's half the battle for the year right there- to win over the parents. They have the rest of the year to work hard!
Good luck!
