Very nervous...

I know when you are pregnant you can't change cat litter(dh has been doing it) but I have swept the litter off the floor(while wearing gloves) and holding my cats close. Just scared that I have exposed my unborn child to toxioplasma. Def not going to do it anymore.

For those with cats, do you still touch them, etc??

Both my sister and SIL had cats and took care of them throughout their pregnancies and all their kids are FINE.

If your cats are indoor cats the risk is minimal. Chat Icon

My SIL had FOUR cats through her pregnancy and she is fine. She was told that if you have had cats for a long time you are probably immune.

Re: Very nervous...

We have our two kitties and they sleep in my arms every single night and I kiss them about 20 times a day each (pathetic I know). I would not worry at all. Especially if they are strictly indoor kitties. I was also tested for the tox in the beginning of the pregnancy. I actually put gloves on and changed the litter once or twice during my pregnancy out of frustration of DH not doing it.

Re: Very nervous...

From what I understand- the TRUE risk from toxoplasmosis is from handling the feces of infected animals. Additionally, if your cats are indoor cats, then there is little to no risk. Cats get toxoplasmosis from catching and eating wild prey, like birds and mice.

DH has been changing the litter- but I would do it with no problem (just don't tell HIM that!!Chat Icon ).

You can totally touch your cats. Mine slept with me all the time. The important thing is not to be around old cat poop. That is what gives off the spores that carry the toxoplasmosis.

Re: Very nervous...

I hug and cuddle my cat every single day. And I sweep the litter off the floor daily as well.

I really avoid street cats because you don't know what they have. My dad feeds "street" cats and I used to pet them but now I avoid it.

Don't deprive your kittys any attention. They really need it now with everything else changing. Chat Icon

It's nice to see that not only my cats like to throw litter around all over the floor instead of keeping it IN the box.Chat Icon

Same here. He's done nothing but complain about it and I have to nag him. I've done it a couple times when he wasn't around and I was so frustrated...but I won't tell him that either. He keeps saying, "If you can sleep with that cat who was routing around in the kitty litter right before he got into bed with you, then you can do the litter." True, but he's gonna do something around the house for pete's sake!

ETA: I stopped eating out my garden this summer because I have like 10 outside cats that live on either side of me that like to use my yard as a litter box and the doc said that I was more likely to be exposed to toxo from them being in the garden than from my own indoor guy.

Re: Very nervous...

I asked my doctor about this before becoming pregnant as I have two cats. He said not a problem at all to hold, touch, play with the cats. I CAN change the litter but would need to wear gloves and wash well after - but that it is just easier to have my DH change it so no worries. BTW my cats are solely indoor cats

agreed, it's very rare that you'll get it from your indoor house cat....BUT to be safe, let DH handle all the clean up. it's ok to hold your kitty....you just don't need to risk coming in contact with anything.
